- A Professorial and CPA Alliance to Improve Undergraduate Accounting Education
- Which undergraduate academic areas merit the most attention when preparing students to succeed in public accounting? This study details the electronic “clicker” responses of 30 experienced California CPAs selected to participate in a day-long forum sponsored by the California Society of CPAs. Practitioner responses are viewed through the lens of both social science research on developing professional expertise and international accounting education standards. The results suggest that a broad base of knowledge beyond technical accounting is an essential foundation for success. A balanced academic program with emphasis on developing written communication skills and analytical thinking is highly preferred. The CPAs polled favor the 150-hour requirement and appear relatively satisfied with the current CPA exam and practice experience requirements. However, these current standards fall short of the dedicated study and practice needed to develop expertise as evidenced by empirical findings across professions and also the minimum pre-certification international accounting education standards.

- Are Small Investors Harmed by Dark Pools?
- Industry analysts estimate that about 20% of U.S. stock market volume takes place in "dark pool" electronic platforms. These privately-owned platforms are commonly referred to as dark pools because they do not display any information to the public. Although big brokers and institutional investors are increasing their use of these trading venues, small investors are not allowed access. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has indicated that dark pools "do raise regulatory concerns that bear watching," but they have not yet done so. My research is to conduct an empirical study of whether small investors are harmed because they cannot access dark pools.

- Blink: CPAs' View Pre-Certification Education
- Shows practitioner preference for the Model 3 (USC model) accounting program, and also draws on some of the other data regarding practitioner ratings on courses, knowledge and skills desired. The results dovetail well with recent higher education reform movements on undergraduate education (like the Harvard general education revision) and with the idea of solving part of the impeding shortfall in accounting faculty by better partnering with other areas of the university (to build up foundational analytical and communication skills).

- Can Minors License Their Copyrighted Photos To Instagram?
- Social media is an integral component of our lives, both for individuals and for businesses. Minors are active users of social media, often being early adapters to each new platform. Parents and grandparents encourage minors to post photos online because it’s a way for distant family to keep in touch. However, Instagram, a burgeoning platform acquired by Facebook, recently suggested that it would start asking minors to authorize Instagram to use posters’ photos for their own use, which could potentially extend to selling those photos. How can a minor, who lacks capacity to contract, grant a license to Instagram to use such photos? How can a minor possibly understand the ramifications of clicking “agree” to a clickwrap terms of service agreement? And would or should such an agreement be enforceable?

- Difficult Vocabulary in the Undergraduate, Survey Organizational Behaivor Course
- Undergraduate students enrolled in a required, survey course in management and organizational behavior at a large, urban, public campus select a book on management, broadly defined, from a narrow range of relevant books in the campus library. Part of the resulting book report is the identification of two unknown or challenging terms. Approximately 750 students have completed this assignment over the past four years. The most difficult words (with the reporting frequency in parentheses) were “paradigm” (10), “synergy” (7), “acrimonious” (5), “axiom” (5), “congruent” (5), “hubris” (5), “remuneration” (5), “benchmark” (4), “convergent” (4), “idiosyncratic” (4), “pertinent” (4), “reprimand” (4), and “ubiquitous” (4). An analysis of these and other words from this recurring activity offers 1), a unique insight into the cognitive processes and learning patterns of a contemporary business student and 2), a qualitative mirror of the formative elements of the course syllabus and 3), perhaps a signpost and normative position to guide the design and development of outcomes, knowledge, activities, and measures associated with future organizational behavior courses.

- Divorcing the Defense of Marriage Act: Judicial Tensions in Upholding the Legislated Preclusion of Federal Same-Sex Marital Rights
- The federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), passed by Congress in 1996, defines marriage to be between one man and one woman and permits states to disregard marriages legally performed in other states. All federal marital rights are tied to the definition of marriage set forth in DOMA, including significant tax, Social Security, dependency and death benefits. In a sharp turn, recent court rulings have sided against the Act and declared it unconstitutional. In addition, the President and Attorney General have denounced DOMA as unconstitutional, dropped their legal defense of the Act, and called for heightened scrutiny in its evaluation. This paper will evaluate the first set of federal companion cases that ruled DOMA unconstitutional, the Attorney General’s letter describing the Administration’s abandonment of DOMA, and suggest the path of the Act’s impending litigation.

- Do Short-Sellers Trade Well?
- The purpose of my research project is to conduct an empirical study to determine whether short-sellers trade well. Previous academic researchers have only addressed whether short-sellers could profit in theory. Diether et al (2009) estimates that potential profits from theoretical short-selling strategies are relatively small (on the order of 1.4% per month before execution costs). Diether et al (2009) conclude “unless a trader managed her costs very effectively (maybe through the use of limit orders), she could easily wipe out the positive return.” In essence, short-sellers have to trade well to profit. The expected outcome of my research project is an analysis of whether short-sellers actually do trade well in practice.

The paper also finds that forecasts issued early in quarters after Reg. FD are less accurate than similarly timed forecasts prior to Reg. FD. However, our evidence indicates that by the end of the quarter, analysts’ forecasts are as accurate after Reg. FD as they were prior to the regulatory change.

- Economics of corporate governance
- This paper studies the problem of corporate governance in Corporate America. The use of stock option to motivate executives has backfired on stockholders in increasing stock ownership of a corporation by executives of the corporation, and allowing executives to seat on the Board of Directors. There is no separation of decision control and decision management. This explain why the ratio of executive pay to average worker pay is so much higher in USA versus Japan and yet Corporate America is losing market share to Japanese Corporations.

The paper concludes with an examination of lessons learned and recommendations for improving the assignment. Status: Data collected; statistical analysis and writing are in progress.

- Product Diversification and Performance in the Financial Industry: FHCs’ Expansion into Insurance Activities
- This article investigates whether insurance activities (underwriting and agency) enhance the financial performance of financial holding companies (FHCs). Stiroh and Rumble (2006) and Yeager et al. (2007) have argued that extension of banking to non-banking activities provides no diversification benefits for FHCs eligible to consolidate banking and insurance services. Using quarterly panel observations of 510 FHCs over the period 2003-2005, we obtain two main results: First, when we employ the aggregate non-interest income as a measure of expansion, risk-adjusted return of FHCs is positively associated with a shift toward non-interest activities. Second, when we disaggregate the sample by FHC size, risk-adjusted return is positively associated with insurance agency activities in small-sized FHCs and positively associated with insurance underwriting activities in mid-sized FHCs. An implication of our finding is that both small and mid-sized FHCs can reap diversification benefits as long as they choose the right niche.

- The passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) in 2002 resulted in an increased focus on financial reporting and corporate governance. Expectations were high for a new era of self-policing that would eliminate the kinds of Enron-style reporting excesses that spawned SOX. The role of the internal auditor as a member of the corporate governance team changed radically. In 2002 we polled The Institute of Internal Auditor members on the initial effect of SOX on internal audit activity; in 2007 we explored SOX’s impact after 5 years. And in this 2012 survey we investigated the continuing impact of Sarbanes-Oxley, 10 years after its passage. Data collected; statistical analysis and writing are in progress. - The Effectiveness of Learning in the Mass Customization Manufacturing Environment
- Retail customers are demanding more variety, more features and quicker order response times from manufacturers. Production systems have had to become more flexible to respond to the variety of styles, materials and patterns offered by retailers. In this make-to-order environment, the orders received must be grouped into specific, logical batches whose short-cycle operations require close coordination and monitoring throughout the facility. The very skillful labor force would be an essential factor to enforce and to maintain the abilities to stay high in competitiveness.
The pattern of Learning, the percentage of the learning, the length of time needed to reach goal line and the effectiveness of the relationships between training and learning would be the interesting areas for me to do more research into.

- Understanding Every Word
- Students are battling increasing pressures for their attention from multiple sources, including family, friends, jobs, and school. Many feel that it is hard enough just to read all of the assigned material, let alone understand it. But they simply must strive to understand every word on the page. It is a skill that will serve them well not only in school, but in their daily lives. For example, we must all understand every word in a contract or we won’t be able to comprehend the extent of our obligations. Why are we resistant to taking the time to understand the words that are the fabric of our lives? Why is using a dictionary often viewed by students as a sign of a lack of intelligence? What can we do to encourage students to take the time and make the effort to understand every word?

- Written Communication Skills for Accounting Professionals: An Employer Perspective
- Communication skills are a fundamental personal competency required for a successful career in accounting. There is ample evidence that employers expect entry-level professionals to not only possess a battery of technical skills but the ability to communicate, both orally and in writing. What isn’t so obvious is the specific communication skills employers are looking for and the degree to which those skills are computer-mediated. Using a survey methodology, this paper explores the particular entry-level written and computer-mediated communication skills employers expect of new hires and their satisfaction with accounting graduates’ preparation levels.
