Carole Gorin
Botanical Artist, Prints and Cards

Carole H. Gorin is a botanical artist living in West Los Angeles.  She has a degree in art education and has taught art at the elementary level.  After her children had grown, she was able to turn back to her art. It was her love of flowers and nature that attracted her to the botanical classes in 2002.  The accuracy of drawing in botanical art is something that she wanted in her artwork  - counting each petal to make sure that she is being true to the actual plant.  She is an active member of the local Botanical Artists Guild and also a member of CPSA and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators.  Her work has been shown in local and international exhibits.  Some of her pieces are held in public and private collections around the country. She work mostly in colored pencil, but also finds working in graphic pencil very gratifying.  She hopes you enjoy the beauty of nature as seen through her eyes.

Sally Jacobs

Sally Jacobs, a botanical artist living in Los Angeles, studied botanical art at Otis College of Art and Design and the New York Botanical Art Certification Program. She has taught botanical illustration at the Otis College of Art and Design and the Los Angeles Arboretum.

"I’m attracted to strongly three-dimensional forms, so I often paint fruits and vegetables," says Jacobs. "The cylindrical-shaped pineapple (a symbol of hospitality) is actually many small fruits fused together, creating the spiral modules that comprise the tough and waxy rind. I enjoyed figuring out the pattern of the skin to create a realistic rendering, and the variety in color (which changes depending on ripeness) attracted me. I liked the challenge of creating the intricate form of each of the small fruits, while still capturing the overall shape of the pineapple. Also, the long, stiff, pointed leaves had to be convincing."

Her early education included a BA from Cornell University (biology), MA from Harvard University (science education), and an EdD from UCLA. In addition to teaching, she has developed educational curriculum and was a partner for many years in a successful software business. Since selling the company, she has devoted most of her time to botanical art.

Sally’s drawings and paintings have been in numerous shows in Southern California, including a solo show at the Forbes Hall Gallery in Santa Monica. Her work was selected for the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th  Annual International Juried Botanical Art Exhibition in New York City; the New York State Museum’s “Focus on Nature” exhibit; and the 5th and 6th Annual Botanical Art Exhibit at Filoli in Woodside, California. She has served on grant review panels for the National Endowment for the Arts and her work was featured on CNN/fn’s “Your Money” television show.

Sally is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. Giclee prints range from $70-$100.00. Her Web site is: www.sallyjacobs.com

Fred Kuretski
Xray Photographer, Prints

While pursuing doctoral studies in literature in the late 60's Frederick Kuretski met Arthur Sinsabaugh who, at that time, was the chair of the Photo Department at the University of Illinois. He apprenticed with Sinsabaugh for a year, helping in the creation of some of his Mid-West landscapes.

His studies took him away from photography to writing and eventually to cinema where he had the good fortune of winning a number of International festivals, including a shared gold medal at Cannes. His university experience in film began as a founding faculty member of the California Institute of the Arts and continued as the initiator of the film production option at California State University, Northridge, where he has taught film production and aesthetics since 1973.

His experiences with Sinsabaugh were not forgotten and in the early nineties he rekindled his practice of photography. Reviewers of his solo, duo and group exhibitions at commercial galleries have since lauded his photographs. Galleries in Los Angeles, Tulsa and Chicago represent him.

Artwrok will be included in raffle items.

Brian Peterson
Jazz Musicians Artistic Drawings

Brian Petersen is an instructor with the Art Department at California State University, Northridge, and a commercial freelance illustrator since 1994 using both traditional and digital media. He is a member of CPSA (Colored Pencil Society of America), and NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals).

Brian's college education emphasized Illustration and Photography, so he enjoys using both direct contact media (Prismacolor, Graphite, Pastel, and Acrylic), as well as digital paint to create images that express a joyful or contemplative element of life. Drawing has always been the fundamental basis for his work, and he tries to keep it as expressive as possible, even when using digital photography for reference, and composition.

The jazz musician series was developed from his lifelong interest in music, playing the piano, sax, and guitar, and having first hand experience with the range of emotions it can stir in all of us. He looks for the quiet inner pleasures and moments that make music performance so memorable, and try to describe them with line, color, and form.

Original drawings (14” x 20” to 24 x 36”), range from $400.00 to $600.00
Giclee prints (13” x 19” to 13”x 44”), range from $60.00 to $100.00

David SchwARTZ

David SchwARTZ was first inspired to become an artist by his grandmother, Goldie. An immigrant from Austria, she reestablished herself in America where she raised her family. David vividly recalls the tall sailboats that his grandmother would draw and paint for him. Even today, it's often the first drawing he will present to young children himself.

Art is more than a practice or the study of a technique to David. His work connects him to the almost incomprehensible power of the universe. “The Shaman of my soul sings when I paint,” he says. “Sometimes, I feel I touch The Great Chord to which we are all attached.”

Honoring his New England roots, David has settled near the ocean in Silverstrand Beach, California where he is at home in his studio. Here, he paints in the spirit of Southern California.

Through ARTZworks.com, he is able to make his work available in prints, gicles, and canvas. His commissions also include interior and exterior murals. David SchwARTZ can be seen painting live at Universal City Walk’s Café Tu Tu Tango where he is currently showing the ABSOLUT series along with land and seascapes.

SchwARTZ received private instruction at the Gino Conti Studio in Providence, R.I., Rhode Island School of Design in Providence and at the Studio Art Center International in Florence, Italy. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in studio art and printmaking from the University of Massachusetts as well as additional study at the University of Hawaii.

David will be featuring his latest series, “Wine Tasting” at the Twilight Garden Party.  Original canvases start at $100, and two of David’s works will be featured in the Silent Auction and Raffle Drawing.  For more information, please visit the website or better yet, give him a call!

Melanie Symonds
Color Pencil, Graphite, & Pen and Ink

Melanie Symonds was born in England and raised in Southern California. She holds two art degrees: a Diploma of Higher Education from Wimbledon School of Art in London, England,
and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. She is currently a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and The Guild
of Natural Science Illustrators.

Melanie's interest in the local flora and fauna around her started in childhood as she explored the muddy reaches of the Upper Newport Bay near her home, but she didn't start drawing California native plants until 1998, after working fifteen years in the field of costume design. Colored pencil is the primary medium for most of Melanie's botanical work, but she equally enjoys working in ink and graphite and acrylics. Her subjects have included native and non-native flowers, trees, shrubs, cacti, succulents, ferns and dried seedpods. She enjoys the wealth of plant material to be found locally, with everything from mountain to desert to island habitats close-by in southern California. Further examples of her work can be seen online in the Members Gallery of the American Society of Botanical Artists website at: www.amsocbotartists.com.
