My research interest is mechanisms of immunity in syphilis, with emphasis on humoral immunity in experimental syphilis. Specific antitreponemal antibody develops during infection with Treponema pallidum, the causative agent of syphilis, and symptomatic infection is resolved, but the bacterial agent is not eliminated and symptoms may occur in humans. Antibody from an immune host has been shown to kill T. pallidum in vitro and to confer resistance to infection in the experimental model. Antibody does not eliminate the treponemes after infection and asymptomatic infection persists. My areas of investigation include the role of antibody in pathogenesis and immunity, protective function of antibody, me-chanism by which antibody kills T. pallidum, and immunocytochemistry and antigen location in treponemes by immunolectron microscopy with poly-valent and monoclonal antibodies.

A second research interest centers on the genetic and biochemical relationship between species of Mycobacterium and among strains of the M. avium- intracellulave complex isolated from clinical and environmental sources.
