Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer at Cal State University Northridge Botanic Garden. Hands-on contributions are a vital part of the ongoing maintenance and growth of the facility. We have developed a few guidelines which formalizes our commitment to volunteers.
Time commitment
Volunteers meet from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. on Thursday morning. We always make one or two staff members available at this time.
Attire
For your safety and enjoyment please dress appropriately. Comfortable shoes are a must. Consider a hat and/or sunscreen depending on the weather. You are encouraged to bring your own pruners and gloves.
Parking
If you inform us ahead of time, we can reserve a visitor’s parking pass for you at the Lindley/Nordhoff information booth. This will allow you access to a nearby parking lot. If you haven’t given us notice, the best place to park is on the one-way, Prairie Loop in the four hour, free parking. Finding a spot here can sometimes be difficult and you can always purchase a parking pass once you get to campus.
Registration
Our Volunteer Program is informal. We do need to have you sign a Volunteer Release form. This is easily accomplished on your first visit.
Tasks
Activities vary considerably but are centered around light gardening duties. Such things as: weeding, starting seeds, transplanting, soil mixing, propagation, minor pruning, grooming of plant material and repotting are often done. Occassionally, we take an excursion away to a botanically interesting location.
Hands-on horticultural instruction
The many aspects of horticultural tasks and light gardening skills, inventory: labeling, record entry, seed collection.
Plant Swap
Because our goal is to always increase our diversity, we encourage trading plants with our volunteers. We feel it is in our best interest to have duplicates of our plants growing in your residence. In the unfortunate case where we lose a plant, a ready known source is at hand. We prefer named specimens that enhance our collection for the students.
