From the cold tolerant 'Siberian' to the hefty poundage of 'Mortgage Lifter', heirloom tomatoes provide both horticultural and culinary interest. They look great, their stories are great and most importantly, they taste great!
Legendary TOMATOMANIAC, Scott Daigre having been at the forefront of popularizing these varieties to the Los Angeles market is eager to share his knowledge with you. He will highlight his favorite varieties and offer recommendations for growing them. Come prepared with your questions about soil preparation, staking, fertilizing, saving seeds, and getting the best production of tomatoes possible. His book will be on sale at a special price for all attendees!
Often one of the first plants to a new gardener, tomatoes are easy to grow and offer great tasty rewards. Join us!
Topic: SIMPLY CYMBIDIUMS
Instructor: Nedra Bushby
Course date: Sat., July 14, 2007, 9:00-10:30 Registration opens June 14.
Registration is required. Please register via e-mail at:botanicgarden@csun.edu
Bio: A long-time volunteer at the CSUN Botanic Garden, Nedra has gardened in the San Fernando Valley for many decades. At last count, her cymbidium orchid collection numbered close to 300 plants.
Course description: Cymbidium orchids are the quintessential corsage flower and millions are sold at Easter and prom time. Fortunately for San Fernando Valley gardeners, cymbidiums are relatively easy to grow, and can flourish on a protected patio.
Unlike many orchids that require high humidity and stable temperatures, cymbidiums prefer lower humidity, and tolerate a wider range of temperatures. San Fernando Valley cymbidium growers commonly maintain their collections outdoors, in sheltered patio areas, all year round.
Long-time CSUN Botanic Garden Volunteer and Valley resident, Nedra Bushby, will discuss her methods for growing cymbidium orchids, including her favorite orchid-growing medium (based on decades of cymbidium growing experience). Her demonstration of orchid grooming and repotting will provide an opportunity for students to participate and gain hands-on experience in orchid cultivation.
