About

The Cal State Northridge Botanic Garden has evolved over the years since its dedication in 1959. Originally planted with California natives, the 1.5-acre Garden is now a collection of some 1,200 plant species representing many regions and climates.

Nestled immediately south of the University Student Union, the Botanic Garden and its four greenhouses have become:

  • a living library of diverse plant specimens
  • an outdoor classroom for students of all ages
  • a beautiful refuge for quiet study or strolling
  • an ever-changing setting to paint or sketch
  • a valued community asset

The Garden is a vital academic resource. CSUN students use specimens for class assignments and research projects in biology principles, plant biology, plant ecology, plant morphology, plant physiology and entomology. Students of art, design and photography seek and find inspiration there.

The Garden is open to the public. Visitors can explore areas devoted to cacti and succulents, tropical plants, native grasses, New Zealand plants, palms, herbs, redwood trees and much more. Step inside the four greenhouses and you will find a dazzling profusion of orchids, bromeliads and ferns. A lovely pond with waterfall and island, formally dedicated in February 1999, extends the Garden's southern boundary and provides a soothing, cooling refuge. Inquisitive squirrels, beautiful butterflies and many species of birds and insects divert the observer.

The Garden is an important community resource. Staff members welcome student groups from surrounding schools, garden clubs, organization meetings and film companies to the Garden--they also offer courses on a variety of topics of interest to local gardeners through the CSUN Extended Learning program.
