Professional Shadowing Program - Professional FAQ

What is the Professional Shadowing Program?
The Professional Shadowing Program is a program designed to connect Business Honors Association (BHA) students with local business professionals through a one-day job shadow expedition.

What does this entail for me?
Professional shadowing is about sharing all, or part of your day with a motivated business honors student, helping to further clarify their understanding of your business and life as a working professional. The BHA shadowing program also enables you to share your passion for your career and industry by contributing to your local community.  If you're passionate about your career, wouldn't you want to share that enthusiasm with students just starting their own?

How does this program work?
This program is available to all interested students within the BHA.  We have asked them to submit their formal interest to the program at which point they are paired with a professional for shadowing. When matched with a student, we will send you the details of the student and ask them to contact you to arrange the actual shadow date.

What do I have to do?
Although the student is there to observe all or part of your day, there are a few guidelines designed to make the shadowing process easier. First, include the student in your day.  Introduce him/her to your career and industry. Show the student what makes your work unique.  Let them participate by helping with tasks, conducting informational interviews with various people within the organization, and by attending meetings or special events. Tell the student why you decided on your profession and what makes it interesting for you. Most importantly, we expect you to have some fun! It's not everyday that you get the opportunity to shape a student's concept of being a professional. Your actions could have a life long impact.

What if my work is of a confidential nature?
All students will be aware that some work may be confidential. In order to accommodate this, all PSP participants are willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement, if necessary.

What if I am not matched with a student?
If you are not matched with a student, there are still many valuable ways for you to offer career guidance to our students and become involved in the Business Honors Association through our Professional Mentorship Program.  Further information regarding these opportunities can be provided to you by simply contacting us at CSUNShadowing@gmail.com.

If interested, can I possibly consider the student for future recruiting?
Because we want the students to focus on learning and enjoying themselves, we have asked them not to bring their resume.  However, you may keep in contact with them after the shadow for internship or job opportunities if you are impressed with them.

This is a great program!  How can I involve other professionals that I know?
As you will enjoy your experience, feel free to refer your coworkers and associates to the Business Honors Association's Professional Shadowing Program at California State University, Northridge via our email CSUNShadowing@gmail.com.
