Classroom Technology FAQ

Q: How do I hook up my laptop to the data projector mounted on the ceiling?

A: We have a laptop troubleshooting guide to help you do this. Here is a brief explanation. All laptops are slightly different, but almost all PC based laptops use a Function Key, which is located along the top row of keys on the keyboard, to send the video signal to the external VGA connector. Look for the letters "LCD/CRT" or a small picture of a TV on the correct FUNCTION key. Hold down that FUNCTION key AND the "Fn" key together and release both, you should see the signal on the projector. Pressing both keys again will usually send the video signal to BOTH the projector and the laptop's panel display. Pressing both keys again will usually cycle through a sequence of laptop panel display only, then the projector, then both, then just the laptop panel only.

For Macs, it usually knows as soon as you hook up the external cable and switches automatically. You will need an adaptor cable which came with your PowerBook. If it doesn’t come up automatically, check the System Preferences/Displays. Examine the “Mirror Displays?” box, it should be checked.

Q: How do I turn on Closed Captions in my classroom?

A: There are two methods, it depends on the classroom. Older classrooms use an external Closed Caption decoder, newer classrooms are equipped with a Closed Caption decoder built in to the data projector. In older classrooms, call x3062 for assistance. In newer classrooms with a Extron controller mounted to the black box, simply press the “CC ON/OFF” button once to turn them on and again to turn them off.

Q: The VGA cable I need to hookup my laptop is missing from my classroom, what do I do?

Q: All I see on the projector screen is a blue screen and it says "No Signal". What do I do?

A: The projector is on the wrong input. Use the remote to switch to the proper input. For viewing UVN/TV, the projector needs to be on VID 1, to watch the PC or your laptop, try COMP1 or COMP2.

Q: How do I login to the computer in the room?

A: You should be able to use your campus login and password. This is the same login and password you use to access your campus email. Make sure you log off when you are done using the computer. This will allow the user that follows you to login. If the previous user failed to log out, you must turn the PC off, then back on to login.

Q: The projector won't turn on, what should I do?

A: Check the projector for two small flashing lights on the bottom. If they are red, the lamp needs replacing in the projector, call x3062 to report it. We will change it as soon as possible. If the lights are green, keep waiting, it takes a minute or so for the light to come on after the projector warms up. If any lights on the bottom are blinking green, the projector is still “thinking” and should not be disturbed yet. Do not try to change sources or turn it on or off during the time the green lights are blinking, the projector is busy.

Q: How can I be trained on using the media equipment in the room?

A: Call x3062 for training. We will arrange training for the specific classroom you teach in or one just like it. Not all rooms are available right away, but we can generally train you immediately or at your convenience. There are also instructions posted inside the black box.
