Purpose: Promote the sport of archery to fellow students and compete at the collegiate level

Year founded:2009

Brief history: CSUN Archery was founded in 2009 and has had members compete at state and national tournaments. 

League: United States Collegiate Archery Association and USA Archery

Accomplishments: Four members competed in the state tournament and Raymond Paguia finished 11th at collegiate nationals.

Ballroom Dance

Purpose: Be more involved on campus and generate interest in ballroom dancing

Year founded:2008

Accomplishments: Members have done well in competitions and have won a few school awards.

AS Sport Clubs - Ballroom Dance

Boxing Club

Club president: McArio Del Castillo

Purpose: Expose the CSUN community to the sport of boxing and to compete against other universities

Brief history: The boxing club mainly began competing in local boxing shows in 2007 before joining the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA).

Year founded: 2007

League: National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA)

Accomplishments: Began competing in the NCBA in 2010 and former team member Lisa Porter attended the Olympic Trials

Practice: Participants practice two to four days a week in Redwood Hall 251 and are expected to compete at least once a semester.

AS Sport Clubs - Matador Boxing Team

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Purpose: Promote an active lifestyle, discipline, self-defense and new friendships through the "gentle art" known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Year founded: 2007

Brief history: The club was started by a CSUN alumnus and 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu instructor. After a two-year hiatus, the club was reformed and is now instructed by black belt Jean Jacques Machado.

League: International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), North American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (NABJJF) and collegiate events in both gi and no-gi grappling. Competing in tournaments is not required but encouraged.

Practice: Participants practice in Redwood Hall 251, Monday and Wednesday, 9-11 p.m.

AS Sport Clubs - Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu


The CSUN Cheer Club is one of the most recognizable groups on campus. If your department would like the club to attend an event, please email us 30 days in advance. We will respond within three business days to let you know whether we can attend your department’s event.

Purpose: Compete at the national level, promote school spirit, and encourage others to succeed and strive for excellence in the classroom, on cheer mats and in their futures. The club attends National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Sport Clubs and other university-related events by request.

Brief history: CSUN finished second at the United Spirit Association (USA) nationals in 2008, traveled to the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) nationals in 2009 and placed third in the USA nationals group stunt competition in 2010. The club has significantly grown as an organization and has gained a school reputation for its involvement and promotion on campus.

Accomplishments: Competed at the USA Cheer Nationals and finished 14th in the nation in 2012.

AS Sport Clubs - Cheer


Purpose: Hip-hop dance crew that utilizes many diverse dance styles

Year founded: 2002

League: Year-round competitions within the dance community

Accomplishments: Past Fasmode Dance Crew members have participated on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew and gained entry into international dance events.

Club president: Eunice Hahn

Purpose: CSUN Hip-Hop Dance is comprised of a diverse group of incredibly talented individuals who all share a passion for dance. We perform at school events (CSUN Annual Student Showcase) and various venues outside of CSUN, the Key Club (Carnival), The Highlands, The Avalon and many others. All in all, CSUN Hip Hop Dance Team creates a creative haven for many of its members where they can let loose and get down. Life is dance and the whole world is your stage!

Year founded: 2001

Brief history: CSUN Hip-Hop Dance incorporates many styles of dance into their original and innovative hip-hop choreography and has become a recognizable club on and off campus. Many former members have gone on to gain a reputation in the global dance community.

Accomplishments: Best dance and best overall team at the CSUN Student Showcase.

CSUN Hip Hop club

Ice Hockey

Purpose: Compete for the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) national championship and expose the CSUN community to collegiate ice hockey

Brief history: The club was founded in 1972 and was a member of the first collegiate hockey club league in the nation – the Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association, along with founding members Cal Tech and UCLA. The club has won numerous PCHA titles and has been to the ACHA Division 3 National Championships two out of the last three seasons. The team has had multiple players selected to All Regional teams and All American teams and has had at least 3 players make the All Academic team each year since 2007.

League: American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) , Division II

Practice: Participants attend on-ice practice Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:15-8:45 a.m., and conditioning off-ice practice on Mondays and Wednesdays, 7 a.m. Practices take place at the Los Angeles Kings Valley Ice Center and the Student Recreation Center . The ice hockey season includes 23 regular season games in addition to playoffs, August-March.

CSUN Men's Ice Hockey Team


Club President: Erik Millan

Purpose: Our goal is to strive for perfection through the improvement of mental and physical health. Shotokan Karate builds confidence, stamina, strength, flexibility and coordination while teaching patience and self-discipline.

Brief History: The C.S.U.N. Karate Club was established in 1969. This club is directly affiliated with the Shotokan Karate-do International Federation (S.K.I.F.).

Year Founded: 1969

Practice: Mondays and Fridays 7:00-8:30pm, Wednesdays 8:00-9:00pm, and Saturdays 12:00-1:30pm in Redwood Hall room B1.

Men's Basketball

Club President: Shaffique Ali


Purpose: Competing in NIRSA’s Regional and National Championships as well as expanding the knowledge of the game of basketball in an exciting and competitive manner, exposing the CSUN community to competitive basketball.

Brief History: CSUN’s Men’s Basketball Club was brought back to campus in 2012. The club has been actively competing in State and National tournaments ever since.

League: NIRSA Regional Basketball League (Region VI)

Practices: Tuesdays (Practice) and Saturdays (Conditioning)

Men’s Rugby

Purpose: The competitive collegiate rugby club plays in the Southern California Rugby Football Union. Along with being competitive in nature, the club fosters the development of sportsmanship, respect, leadership, teamwork, discipline and athletic ability.

Brief history: In 1963, CSUN (known as San Fernando Valley State College at that time) started a very competitive men’s rugby team that lasted until the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Through the tireless efforts of former president JP Sine, the ruby club returned in 2012. With the leadership of the executive board, coaches, captains and club members, the team had a successful first year, earning the Matador Spirit Award and Outstanding New Club Award.

League: Men’s Collegiate Rugby, Division III

Practice: Tuesdays and Thursdays at the CSUN north field, 5:30-8:45 p.m.

Men’s Soccer

Purpose: Provide CSUN students with an opportunity to become better teammates, and develop athletic skills and individual growth through soccer

Year founded: 2007

Brief history: Joel Torres and Carlos Hernandez founded the men’s soccer club, CSUNFC, in 2007, and the club has since increased in membership and recognition. After an undefeated fall 2009 season, the club won the central region. In 2011, they successfully hosted the Spring League Cup and received the Outstanding Sports Club Award that same year.

League: West Coast Soccer Association

Accomplishments: Invited to the 2012 Premier League

Practice: Three times a week in addition to fall and spring season games

AS Sport Clubs - Men's Soccer

Rock Climbing

Club president: Andrea Garcia

Purpose: To expand the climbing community and create a competitive team at CSUN. CSUN Climbing Club was created Spring Semester 2013 and members have competed in a variety of competitions with other schools that have included, UCLA, UCSD, SDSU, and more where members have placed in top ranking positions.

Meetings: Biweekly Wednesdays 5:30pm in the SRC conference room

Practice: The CSUN Climbing Club practices are at Top Out Climbing Gym in Santa Clarita, California on Saturday 10:00am.

Roller Hockey

The CSUN Roller Hockey Club was founded in 2008 by Alex Kleckner. It was established to offer and promote the sport of roller hockey at a competitive level of play. The club offers the opportunity to participate in organized roller hockey to all interested students at Cal State Northridge in an effort to promote awareness of roller hockey and advance interest in roller hockey for both players and fans. Our goal is to improve the popularity of the sport at CSUN by organizing a competitive roller hockey team to compete in the Western Collegiate Roller Hockey League (WCRHL).

Salsa Libre

Club president: Eileen Noriega

Purpose: Encourage CSUN students to pursue and reach out to others through salsa dancing and enrich their lives. In addition, the club strives to form a community of salsa dancers who participate in dance lessons but also learn the artistic aspect of salsa dancing.

Year founded: 2008

Brief history: Salsa Libre includes a performance team and a competition team. The performance team may have more elaborate choreography that merges salsa with other types of dances, such as hip-hop, jazz, tango and bachata. The performance team includes more flexibility in its routine, while the competition team follows strict guidelines set yearly by the College Salsa Congress. The competition team is comprised of students who pursue a higher level of performance, showmanship and competitiveness.

Salsa Libre Club

Tae Kwon Do

Club president: Jonathan Erazo

Purpose: Teach the values of the Korean martial art Taekwondo and cultivate confidence by building strength in the body, mind and soul; construct a community of respect and friendship through courteous competition; and fight for those who can’t fight for themselves -- never out of selfishness, greed or envy

Year founded: 2013

Brief history: Taekwondo is a striking-style martial art that was organized in Korea after its liberation from Japan. Since then, it has become the national sport of South Korea, an Olympic sport and the most widely-practiced martial art in the world. The Taekwondo sport club was established to spread that culture to the students at CSUN.

League: National Collegiate Taekwondo Association (NCTA)

Purpose: Become a more cohesive unit of tennis players and achieve the best possible results at competitive tournaments around Southern California while building character as well as lifelong relationships with teammates.

Year founded: 2007

Brief history: CSUN Club Tennis was established in 2007 and has competed in United States Tennis Association (USTA) on-campus tournaments since inception. We have successfully bridged the gap between casual and competitive advanced players.

League: United States Tennis Association (USTA) , Southern California Division

Accomplishments: Competed at the Pepperdine Invitational and Southern California Sectional Regionals at Claremont McKenna College

AS Sport Clubs - Tennis


Purpose: The CSUN Triathlon Team helps students achieve their goals in the endurance sport called triathlon. The team encourages, motivates and supports athletes, whether it’s helping a participant cross the finish line for the first time or placing first at championships.

Brief history: Although the team is relatively new, most members have a strong background in competitive sports, such as cross country, track and field, cycling and swimming.

Accomplishments: A couple of members recently participated in the collegiate University of California, Merced triathlon, and their results were outstanding. Both a male and female athlete placed second for their division and another participant ranked 15 th overall.

Water Polo

Club President: Josh Halem

Purpose: To expose the CSUN community to collegiate water polo and compete in the Pacific Coast Division. We strive for only excellence, respect, sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, discipline, integrity, and top athletic ability.

Brief History: Our club was founded in 2011 and we have been growing and outperforming ourselves each year.

League: Pacific Coast Division (PCD)

Women's Lacrosse

Club president: Ming Hui Brown

Purpose: The California State University Northridge Women’s Lacrosse Club is a competitive collegiate lacrosse club. Along with being competitive in nature, the club fosters the development of sportsmanship, respect, leadership, teamwork, discipline, and athletic ability in all of its members, while encouraging student success.

Brief history: CSUN Women’s Lacrosse Club started in 2013. We are expanding the knowledge of lacrosse throughout the campus as we begin the journey in the Sports Clubs here at CSUN. We joined the WWLL in 2014 as a provisional team.

Brief history: The CSUN Women’s Rugby Club was founded as an interest group in 2010,  but the club wasn’t officially recognized until the 2011-2012 school year.

League: Southern California Football Rugby Union

Accomplishments: The club attended the first round of the USA Rugby Division II Collegiate National Tournament in its first year in existence.
