Trips

Our programs are available to all current CSUN students, faculty, staff, alumni and their guests. We have trips for every skill level, from novice to expert. The guidelines below will help you select adventures that are right for you. If you’re unsure about your skill level, call or stop by the Outdoor Adventures office, and our friendly staff will help you.

Level 1: Adventure travel at its most relaxed pace for people seeking a remarkable experience with low intensity

Level 2: Great for outdoor novices and those new to active travel who are seeking more knowledge of the outdoor world

Level 3: Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts looking for stimulating adventure in the great outdoors

Level 4: Recommended for fit travelers with basic skills who want an exciting trip with the same fantastic outdoors experience with a little more physical intensity

Please note that you need to sign up at the Outdoor Adventures office for our trips no later than 5pm the day before the scheduled date. Open spots fill up quickly, so sign up as early as possible.

Policies

  • Trips are pet, alcohol, and drug free (in compliance with University policy).
  • Cancellations made less than 72 hours before a trip are not eligible for a refund.
  • Cancellations made more than 72 hours in advance but less than a week before the trip will receive credit for half the dollar amount toward a future trip or rental.
  • Cancellations made seven days or more prior to the trip will be eligible for a full refund minus a $10 processing fee. Alternatively, you may receive full credit toward a future trip.

February 6th - 8th — Camp and Explore Yosemite National Park

Wander through the pristine wilderness of Yosemite National Park, the first park to be designated as a Green Space by the United States Government. Yosemite is filled with a lifetime's worth of waterfalls and granite formations that fill the Valley that is referred to as the gem of the Sierra. Come sleep out under the stars with us as we spend a weekend exploring all the major spots of California's greatest treasure. During this weekend trip we'll cook, hike, and learn about the wonders of the one and only Yosemite Valley. All experience levels welcome.

February 7th — Ski and Ride

Grab some powder by signing up to SKI and RIDE with us. After an early morning departure we'll spend all day on the slopes of Big Bear Ski Resort, before we shuttle back down to Northridge. Any and all experience levels and abilities for skiers or snow boarders are welcome. You may purchase Rentals or Lessons at the Resort, or beforehand through Outdoor Adventures

February 13th - 15th — Camp and Explore Death Valley National Park

Join Outdoor Adventures as we explore a national park containing spectacular desert scenery, complex geology, and undisturbed wilderness. Called the Land of Extremes, Death Valley is home to valleys created by ancient waterways, snowcapped mountains, and sand dunes. Together we will go on several short hikes around the park, slip, slide and roll around on the sand dunes, then at night we'll cook some pretty amazing meals, as we hang out around the campfire under a blanket of stars. The lowest point in North America, is sure to be the highest point of your Spring Semester.

February 14th — Explore the Getty Museum

State of the art architecture, breathtaking views and vantage points, artistic gardens and one of the most impressive collections of beautifully displayed art in the world, the Getty Center is a cultural icon and landmark of California. Join us as we spend the day touring the Museum and all the opportunities and exhibits that it has to offer.

February 20th - 22nd — Snowshoe Backpacking

Like the Native Americans and Explorers before us, ingenuity allows us to experience all types of nature. In this introductory weekend to snowshoeing and camping we'll brave freezing temps to discover and enjoy a winter wonderland. After learning technical skills and safe practices we'll spend most of the time sledding, having snowball fights, building snow shelters, and constructing snowmen and sipping on hot coco until the stars come out. Be prepared for the challenges and rewards of living a Sierra Winter during this snow camping expedition.

February 21st — Waterfall Day Hike

SoCal is pretty much a desert right? Wrong. SoCal, and Los Angeles in particular is home to an astounding amount of awesome waterfall hikes that will be flowing at peak capacity this spring. So slip on some sneakers and join us for a half to full day of hiking to scenic waterfalls with full Instagram and Facebook photo potential. All experience levels welcome! We will visit one of several local favorites on this popular day hike! Whether we visit Sycamore Canyon, Big Santa Anita Canyon, or Escondido Falls, this hike will be an adventure that will make you forget you're in Los Angeles.

February 24th — Full Moon Night Hike

LA is a city where nature will surprise you. Take a night off of studying and come take a relaxing hike through one of the great green spaces around Los Angeles. There is something surreal about walking beneath a full moon with the glow of the city lighting your path. All you need is a pair of shoes and water bottle to come explore the less traveled spots of LA.

February 27th - March 1st — Climb and Explore Eastern Sierra

What if we told you that you could have your cake and eat it too? If it's a trip you're looking for that covers everything,, climbing, hiking, cooking, hot springs, star gazing, and camp fires, you found the right one. Come on up to Bishop California, between the Eastern Sierra, and the White Mountains as we do every Outdoor Activity you can dream up. Make the most out of the last days of sunshine before bunking down for the winter!

February 27th — Rock Climbing at Stone Point

Slip on your shoes and tie in! Outdoor rock climbing is a mental and physical challenge anyone can enjoy, regardless of strength or fear of heights. A full-day venture into the local hills will introduce you to the thrill of rock climbing in a noncompetitive atmosphere. By the end of the day you should feel comfortable with basic climbing knots, belaying, and introductory rock movement techniques. We'll provide you with a variety of climbs for you to have fun and challenge yourself on. This is a great way to get away for the day whether you're a first-time climber or a repeat adventurer.

February 28th — Ski and Ride

March 6th - 8th — Camp and Explore Joshua Tree

Let's go camping in our backyard National Park, Joshua Tree. We will do several hikes through the Martian landscape as we play and learn about the parks geology, history, and some naturalism of the surrounding area. After trekking through this wonderland of rocks we will cook and relax under the blanket of the starry night sky, as we tell stories and roast marshmallow around the campfire.

March 13th - 15th — Camp and Explore Big Sur

Come explore this amazing stretch of coastline and discover why Big Sur is said to be one of the most beautiful places in California. This trip begins with one of the most beautiful drives in California, up the Big Sur coast; there are panoramic coastal views, common sightings of elephant seals, and inland waterfalls that lead to the beach. This weekend outing will consist of elephant seals, a couple of the most scenic waterfalls California has to offer, walks on the beach, a pacific ocean swim, marshmallows, a roaring campfire, cozy tents, and a walk amongst the redwoods. If any of that sounded remotely interesting we recommend you sign up quick.

March 20th - 22nd — Kayak and Climb the Eastern Sierra

What if we told you that you could have your cake and eat it too. If it's a trip your looking for that covers everything, boating, climbing, hiking, cooking, hot springs, star gazing, camp fires, and swimming, you found the right one. A 4 mile stretch of the lower Owens river awaits us, while the boulders of Happy Sads vie for our attention. Come on up to Bishop California, between the Eastern Sierra, and the White Mountains as we do every Outdoor Activity you can dream up. Make the most out of the first warm days as the winter starts to sneak away.

March 21st — Hike the Hollywood Sign

The world famous Hollywood sign is one of the most iconic spots in all of Southern California. If you haven't gotten out on this nearby hike its time you do so. Designed for anyone and everyone this top tourist destination is a relaxing 3 mile round trip hike will take you to the sign for a photo op, and also to the Griffith observatory, a cutting edge planetarium. Treat yourself to a day off, get some exercise and see a new place on this fun and comfortable day.

March 28th — Explore SoCal Organic Farming

Join us as we roll up our sleeves and prepare to slip our hands into some socal soil at a local organic farm in Malibu. This full day outing will take us to the coastal slopes of Malibu as we visit a communal organic farm. Once there we will meet our host, tour guide, and resident farmer as he takes us on a formal tour of the property. On the tour we will learn about organic practices, the benefits of organic/communal systems, and a new perspective on the health and wellness aspects of food systems.

March 29th — Whale Watching

It's migratory time and whales are are feeling photogenic. We'll jump aboard a large whale watching vessel with indoor cabin, snackbar, and toilets as set sail on the high seas in search of them. During our 2.5 hour tour we may see whales, dolphins, seals and other sea life as we explore the Pacific Ocean during this comfortable day trip. A snack, warm jacket, and adventurous spirit is all you will need to relax, snap some photos and kick back during this perfect day off from school.

April 4th - 9th — Canoe, Kayak and Explore the Everglades and Beaches of Florida

This spring break trip is a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore Florida! This trip will include a glass bottom boat tour over the only park in the United States that lies entirely underwater, canoeing in the Everglades National Park, Kayaking the Florida bay with manatees and other sea animals, exploring multiple state parks and driving through and exploring the Florida Keys! We will fly out of LAX on Saturday April 4th and return to LAX on Thursday April 9th. For more information about this amazing opportunity please stop by our office or give us a call!

April 4th - 10th — Backpack Hawaii - Napali Coast

Aloha Matadors. Something about spring break makes us think of tropical, white sand beaches so we decided to hop a plane and head out to Kaui Island of the great state of Hawaii. Kaui is home to the Napli coast and one of the most famous backpacking trails in the US. For 4 days we will live and lie reclined amongst this tropical paradise, hiking for miles and miles along the same stretch of coast where they filmed Jurrasic park. Before and after our four days of beach backpacking we will take to the many state parks in search of hidden waterfalls, swimming holes and tropical flora and fauana, as we make the most out of this once in a life time trip.

April 4th - 10th — Discover Arizona

Discover the wonders of Arizona with Outdoor Adventures this spring break! Not only will we admire the infamous Grand Canyon, but we will explore the brightly colored buttes of Sedona, experience swimming and cliff jumping at the natural slides at Slide rock, bare witness to the beauty of Monument Valley, and much more!

April 17th - 19th — Whitewater Raft the Kern Weekend

California's Rivers are calling to whitewater enthusiasts. This trip is open to paddlers of all experience levels as we split our weekend between rafting the rapids and hiking and exploring the western side of the sierra. Pack your hiking shoes and your swim suit as we cram hiking, rafting and camping into our weekend. After each day we'll get a chance to relax and play games around the campfire at night. Together we'll play and learn about the history of and how to whitewater raft, the basics of camping, and leave no trace ethics.

April 17th — Paddle and Play Day at Castaic Lake

Join us on the water as we enjoy a day in the sun at Castaic Lake! The CSUN Aquatics Facility is only a 30 minute drive north of campus, and has Kayaks, Canoes and Standup Paddle boards for us to play with. No experience is needed for any of the equipment as it is your choice to play or learn at your own pace. Our experienced instructors will be on site to help out in any way. Or simply grab a book and some SPF 50 and find some shade in the sand to spend your Friday relaxing.

April 18th — Bungee Jumping

Imagine standing on the edge of a bridge with steep canyon walls rising above you. Your sweaty palms grip the rail, your throat is dry, and your heart beats so hard you can feel it through your chest. You feel a rush as adrenaline surges through your body. Looking down at the water ten stories below, you hear the encouragement of your friends standing next to you as the countdown begins. “5-4-3-2-1-BUNGEE!!!!” Welcome to the most exhilarating, adrenaline pumping activity in the world. Are you ready for the thrill of a lifetime? Join us for a ten mile round trip hike, and a little 100+ ft jump all that make up one amazing life experience.

April 23rd - 27th — Backpack Big Sur

Come explore this amazing stretch of coastline and discover why Big Sur is said to be one of the most beautiful places in California. This trip begins with one of the most beautiful drives in California, up the Big Sur coast; there are panoramic coastal views, common sightings of elephant seals, and inland waterfalls that lead to the beach. We'll spend our first starlit night at a front-country campsite enjoying campfire activities and learning useful backpacking skills. The next two days will be spent hiking through the mountains of the Ventana Wilderness, high up on the Big Sur River, to Sykes Hot Springs. This trip is a great opportunity to learn basic backpacking skills, backcountry navigation, Leave No Trace ethics, backcountry cooking, and much more.

April 24th — Rock Climbing at Stoney Point

May 1st - 3rd — Kayak and Snorkel La Jolla

Come join our adventure as we head to San Diego County to experience the beautiful La Jolla Cove and more! This journey will lead you to the wonderful views of Oceanside Camping. While camping on the gorgeous bluffs of Oceanside, we will overlook a sunset, and perhaps a sunrise, that will never fade from your memory. And that's only Day 1! Day 2, we will venture further south to La Jolla, where the real fun begins. Be ready for an awesome tour while kayaking the open waters, with views of sea caves, cliffs, wildlife, and a seemingly never-ending horizon! Once we finish kayaking, lunch on the beach, with the sound of waves, and the fun of a few games will take over our day. That is, until we snorkel La Jolla cove, one of the most beautiful and popular snorkeling sites in all of Southern California! With these two awesome events, Day 2 will conclude only after a short drive to Palomar Mountain and our campground, with a densely shaded, fairytale-esque like atmosphere, made even better with a fire and some delicious food! Day 3 will signal the end of our journey together, but not before we complete a short hike up to the Palomar Observatory and see the 200 inch Hale Telescope, truly a sight to behold. A short drive back up the coast will have us arrive back at CSUN, officially ending our amazing, once-in-a-life time adventure together. Don't miss out and sign up today!

May 2nd — Waterfall Day Hike

SoCal is pretty much a desert right? Wrong. SoCal, and Los Angeles in particular is home to an astounding amount of awesome waterfall hikes that will be flowing at peak capacity this spring. So slip on some sneakers and join us for a half to full day of hiking to scenic waterfalls with full Instagram and Facebook photo potential. All experience levels welcome! We will visit one of several local favorites on this popular day hike! Whether we visit Sycamore Canyon, Big Santa Anita Canyon, or Escondido Falls, this hike will be an adventure that will make you forget you're in Los Angeles.

May 8th — Paddle and Play Day at Castaic Lake

Join us on the water as we enjoy a day in the sun at Castaic Lake! The CSUN Aquatics Facility is only a 30 minute drive north of campus, and has Kayaks, Canoes and Standup Paddle boards for us to play with. No experience is needed for any of the equipment as it is your choice to play or learn at your own pace. Our experienced instructors will be on site to help out in any way. Or simply grab a book and some SPF 50 and find some shade in the sand to spend your Friday relaxing.

May 9th — Explore the LA Natural History Museum

Need to get out of Northridge for a day. Take a day off of studying and come hang out with us at the LA Natural History Museum. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is the largest natural and historical museum in the western United States, and its collections include nearly 35 million specimens and artifacts and cover 4.5 billion years of history.

May 21st - 25th — Backpack Lake Tahoe

If you live in California are just visiting you must make a yearly trip to Lake Tahoe. We don't make the rules we just enforce them. Celebrate the end of the year by jetting up North with us, to hot springs, past mono lake, to the bluest and deepest lake the US. Once in the Tahoe area, we will pack our packs and head out to the backcountry for a few magical days of outdoor cooking, sleeping under the stars and traversing the most pristine wildernesses that California has to offer. Bring your sense of adventure as well as your camera as we explore one of OAs favorite spots in the state.

May 26th — Kayak the LA River

LA has a River? Be one of the first person in your neighborhood, office or family — or, for our international guests, the first from your entire country — to have paddled the fabled, notorious Los Angeles River! Traveling the river by kayak will provide you with a fresh understanding of the river — distinct from walking or biking along its banks. This experience will fundamentally reconnect you to the river, and will inspire and empower you to be river stewards. As you have fun learning or returning to kayaking, while gathering indelible memories, you too will play a role in creating a clean, healthy, safe and sustainable river for current and future generations.

May 29th - June 1st — Canoe the Colorado River: Black Canyon to Hoover Dam

Canoe the gentle current of the majestic Colorado River through a sculpted black and red walled canyon. You'll be self-contained, with only the gear in your boat, as we embark on a three-day journey to scout for big horn sheep standing on sheer cliff walls, experience secluded sauna caves, leap from the surrounding cliffs and float beneath the towering monolith of the Hoover Dam. At night, we'll gather around a campfire and then hike to hot springs nestled within a narrow canyon pass. Nature doesn't get any better than this. Prepare to learn the basics of camping, canoeing a little bit about this amazing juncture of natural and man-made wonders.

Take a mid-semester break and let us take you to the world famous Grand Canyon all the way in Arizona. In this rugged land carved by years and years of wind and water, we'll explore the iconic scenes that you may have seen in documentaries, post cards and national geographic magazines. Together we'll discover the Canyon and its rich geological and geographic history as well as the basics of camping.

May 29th - June 1st — Camp and Explore Zion National Park

Of the 14 National and State Parks of Utah, Zion is the crown jewel. From Angels landing to the world famous slot canyon named “the Narrows” we'll explore it all on our multiday camping and hiking trip. Get your boots and cameras ready for some long, scenic day hikes among this sandstone wonderland. At night we'll gather around the campfire to share stories and watch the stars. This trip is great for campers of any skill levels and together we'll learn the basics of camping, hiking, geology history of the park and leave no trace ethics.
