Trips

Our programs are available to all current CSUN students, faculty, staff, alumni and their guests. We have trips for every skill level, from novice to expert. The guidelines below will help you select adventures that are right for you. If you’re unsure about your skill level, call or stop by the Outdoor Adventures office, and our friendly staff will help you.

Level 1: Adventure travel at its most relaxed pace for people seeking a remarkable experience with low intensity

Level 2: Great for outdoor novices and those new to active travel who are seeking more knowledge of the outdoor world

Level 3: Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts looking for stimulating adventure in the great outdoors

Level 4: Recommended for fit travelers with basic skills who want an exciting trip with the same fantastic outdoors experience with a little more physical intensity

Please note that you need to sign up at the Outdoor Adventures office for our trips no later than 5pm the day before the scheduled date. Open spots fill up quickly, so sign up as early as possible.

Policies

  • Trips are pet, alcohol, and drug free (in compliance with University policy).
  • Cancellations

    • Multi day trip cancellations

      Cancellations made more than 14 days before the trip will be refunded for the full dollar amount, minus a 20% processing fee. Cancellations made less than 14 days before the trip are not eligible for a refund. Outdoor Adventures reserves the right to cancel any trip due to incompatible conditions for the activity. In the event Outdoor Adventures cancels the trip you will receive a full monetary refund.

    • Single day trip cancellations

      Cancellations made more than 14 days before the trip will receive a refund for the full dollar amount minus a $10 processing fee. Cancellations made less than 14 days before the trip are not eligible for a refund. Outdoor Adventures reserves the right to cancel any trip due to incompatible conditions for the activity.       Special Trips are non-refundable. If you are unable to attend the trip, the paying participant is ineligible for a refund (monetary or credity) or transfer onto another trip. Outdoor Adventures reserves the right to cancel a trip due to incompatible conditions for the activity. In the event Outdoor Adventures cancels the trip you will receive a full monetary refund.

Disclaimer

Due to the nature of Outdoor Recreation all locations, activities and times are subject to change. We love the mother nature but sometimes she's hard to plan with. Weather, water levels, trail conditions, roads closures, and fires can change any trip with little warning. We appreciate the patience, understanding and flexibility of all parities involved in our outings. If changes need to be made we will update our information in a timely manner and will always notify registered participants as soon as possible.

9/2 — Castaic Lake

Join us on the water as we enjoy a day in the sun at Castaic Lake! The CSUN Aquatics Facility is only a 30-minute drive north of campus, and has kayaks, canoes and standup paddle boards for us to play with. No experience is needed for any of the equipment as it is your choice to play or learn at your own pace. Our experienced instructors will be on site to help out in any way.

9/9 — Hollywood Hike

The world famous Hollywood sign is one of the most iconic spots in all of Southern California. If you haven't gotten out on this nearby hike, now's your chance! Designed for all experience levels, this top tourist destination is a 6 mile round trip hike will take you to the base of the sign for excellent photo ops then around to the backside of the landmark for sweeping panoramas of Los Angeles.

9/9 - 9/11 — Camp and Explore Yosemite

Wander through the pristine wilderness of Yosemite National Park, the first park to be designated as a Green Space by the United States Government. Yosemite is filled with a lifetime's worth of waterfalls and granite formations that fill the Valley. Come sleep out under the stars with us as we spend a weekend exploring all the major spots of California's greatest treasure. All experience levels are welcome.

9/10 — Venice Beach Day

If you haven't had the chance to check out Venice Beach, you are out of excuses! Explore the beaches of Venice, as you check out the various stores and vendors on your own, shoot some hoops, set up a slackline, go body surf the waves, or simply throw down a beach chair and read a book, it's a choose your own adventure kind of day.

9/15 — Full Moon Night Hike

LA is a city where nature will surprise you. Take a night off of studying and come take a relaxing hike through one of the great green spaces around Los Angeles. There is something surreal about walking beneath a full moon with the glow of the city lighting your path. All you need is a pair of shoes and water bottle to come explore the secret, less traveled spots of this wonderful city.

9/16 - 9/18 — Climb and Kayak Eastern Sierras

What if we told you that you could have your cake and eat it too? If you're looking for a trip that covers everything from kayaking, climbing, hiking, hot springs, star gazing, camp fires, and swimming, you've found the right one. We will paddle either a 6-mile stretch of the lower Owens River or around Mono Lake and then check out the Happy/Sad Boulders for some world-class bouldering. Come explore the Eastern Sierras through a wide variety of outdoor activities.

9/23 — Rock Climbing at Stone Point

Slip on your shoes and tie in! Outdoor rock climbing is a mental and physical challenge anyone can enjoy, regardless of strength or fear of heights. A full-day venture into the local hills will introduce you to the thrill of rock climbing in a

Noncompetitive atmosphere. By the end of the day, you should feel comfortable with basic climbing knots, belaying, and introductory rock movement techniques. This is a great way to get away for the day whether you're a first-time climber or a repeat adventurer.

9/23 - 9/25 — Backpacking Alpine Lakes

Join us for a serene and tranquil weekend of backpacking to beautiful, untouched alpine lakes. You'll have ample time to relax beside calm lakes or take a dip in the icy, crystal clear water. Whether you're new to backpacking and want to try it out, or have loads of experience, this is the trip for you. We'll take a moderate to relaxed pace as we cover around 10 miles throughout the trip. If you're looking for a chance to unplug and clear your head, this trip is for you!

9/30 - 10/2 — Camp and Explore Sequioa

Start your semester with an adventure you will never forget as CSUN Outdoor Adventures heads up to the heart of Sequoia National Park. We will hike to the largest tree in the US in the otherworldly Sequoia Grove, see Morro Rock, and tour Crystal Cave, one of most well-known cave systems. Come hike, photograph, star gaze, eat, relax, and enjoy everything that the Western Sierra have to offer.

  • Entrance to a guided tour of Crystal Cave in Sequoia National park

10/1 — Canyoneer Eaton Canyon

The toughest trip that Outdoor Adventures has to offer just opened up again. Experience trip leaders will show you the way down 5+ waterfall repels, some over 60 feet tall into deep cold water pools and through the twisty, beautiful maze that is Eaton Canyon. This true full day outing will have you up with sunrise and finishing with the sun setting. Be ready for the realest adventure we have to offer.

Beach days with OA are the best! Let's go picnic, play, surf, snorkel, eat, play volleyball, read, tan, swim, and hang out as we try to hold onto summer for a bit longer. Take the day off from school, throw on your swim suit, and spend the day relaxing at the beach with us!

10/9 — Surf So Cal

When in California, do as the… Californians do! It is a common myth that we surf to classes, so do your part in perpetuating awesome stereotypes and catch some swells out in the Pacific Ocean. We'll be hooking up with a single day outfitter to have professional grade equipment and instruction as we learn how to hang ten, and hopefully not wipe out. We take care of everything, from booking the rental to driving the group to the beach.

10/14 - 10/16 — Kayak and Snorkel La Jolla

Join the adventure as we head to San Diego County to experience the beautiful La Jolla Cove and more! Be ready for an awesome experience while kayaking the open waters, with views of sea caves, cliffs, wildlife, and a seemingly never-ending horizon. We'll take a break and then it's back in the water to snorkel La Jolla cove, one of the most beautiful and popular snorkeling sites in all of Southern California.

Join us for a challenging full day hike to one of the highest points in all of Southern California. We'll experience some of the most beautiful views of the Greater Los Angeles area, check out the Baldy Ski Hut, and maybe sneak in a waterfall photo op.

10/23 — Whale Watching

It's migratory time and whales are feeling photogenic! We'll jump aboard a large whale watching vessel with comfy amenities as set sail on the high seas in search of them. During our 2.5-hour tour we may see whales, dolphins, seals, and other sea life as we explore the Pacific Ocean during this comfortable day trip. A snack, warm jacket, and an adventurous spirit is all you will need to snap some photos and relax during this perfect day off from school.

Come join us for a festive adventure! Take a night off of studying and come take a relaxing hike through one of the great green spaces around Los Angeles. 10/30 — Malibu Creek Hike

If you haven't had the time to check out Malibu Creek, now's your chance to explore this amazing park right in CSUN's backyard. We'll start off early in the morning and make our way to Century Lake for a relaxing lunch break. Continuing on, we'll explore the park more and head back to CSUN mid-afternoon. If you're looking for a chance to clear your head and meet other Matadors, then this trip is for you!

11/6 — Bungee Jumping

Imagine standing on the edge of a bridge with steep canyon walls rising above you. Looking down at the water ten stories below, you hear the encouragement of your friends standing next to you as the countdown begins. "5-4-3-2-1-BUNGEE!" Welcome to the most exhilarating, adrenaline pumping activity in the world. Are you ready for the thrill of a lifetime? Join us for a ten mile round trip hike and a little 100+ ft. jump. It will be a day you won't ever forget!

Of the 14 National and State Parks of Utah, Zion is the crown jewel. From Angels Landing to the world famous slot canyon named "The Narrows", we'll explore it all on our multiday camping and hiking trip. Get your boots and cameras ready for some long, scenic day hikes in this sandstone wonderland. At night we'll gather around the campfire to share stories and star gaze. 11/11 - 11/13 — Backpacking Big Sur

Come explore this amazing stretch of coastline and discover why Big Sur is said to be one of the most beautiful places in California. This trip begins with one of the most beautiful drives in California, up the Big Sur coast where you'll see panoramic coastal views, common sightings of elephant seals, and inland waterfalls that lead to the beach. We'll spend our first starlit night at a front-country campsite enjoying campfire activities and learning useful backpacking skills. The next two days will be spent hiking through the mountains of the Ventana Wilderness, high up on the Big Sur River, to Sykes Hot Springs.

11/18 - 11/20 — Camp and Explore Death Valley

Join us as we explore a national park containing spectacular desert scenery, complex geology, and undisturbed wilderness. Called the Land of Extremes, Death Valley is home to valleys created by ancient waterways, snowcapped mountains, and sand dunes. Together we will go on several short hikes around the park, slip, slide and roll around on the sand dunes, then at night we'll cook some pretty amazing meals, as we hang out around the campfire under a blanket of stars. The lowest point in North America is sure to be the highest point of your Fall Semester.

Wander through the pristine wilderness of Yosemite National Park, the first park to be designated as a Green Space by the United States Government. Yosemite is filled with a lifetime's worth of waterfalls and granite formations that fill the Valley. Come sleep out under the stars with us as we spend a weekend exploring all the major spots of California's greatest treasure. All experience levels are welcome.

Take a mid-semester break and let us take you to the world famous Grand Canyon all the way in Arizona. In this rugged land carved by years and years of wind and water, we'll explore the iconic scenes that you may have seen in documentaries, post cards and national geographic magazines. Together we'll discover the Canyon and its rich geological and geographic history, as well as the basics of camping.

Canoe the gentle current of the majestic Colorado River through a sculpted black and red walled canyon. You'll be self-contained, with only the gear in your boat, as we embark on a three-day journey to scout for big horn sheep standing on sheer cliff walls, experience secluded sauna caves, and float beneath the towering monolith of the Hoover Dam. At night, we'll gather around a campfire and then hike to hot springs nestled within a narrow canyon pass.

12/18 - 12/20 — Snowshoe Backpacking Yosemite

During this introductory weekend to snowshoeing and camping, we'll have the opportunity to discover and enjoy a winter wonderland that most people have never seen. After learning safety and technical skills, we'll spend most of the time sledding, having snowball fights, building snow shelters, and snowmen, all the while sipping on hot coco until the stars come out. Be prepared for the challenges and rewards of exploring Yosemite in winter during this snow camping expedition.
