Trips

Our programs are available to all current CSUN students, faculty, staff, alumni and their guests. We have trips for every skill level, from novice to expert. The guidelines below will help you select adventures that are right for you. If you’re unsure about your skill level, call or stop by the Outdoor Adventures office, and our friendly staff will help you.

Level 1: Adventure travel at its most relaxed pace for people seeking a remarkable experience with low intensity

Level 2: Great for outdoor novices and those new to active travel who are seeking more knowledge of the outdoor world

Level 3: Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts looking for stimulating adventure in the great outdoors

Level 4: Recommended for fit travelers with basic skills who want an exciting trip with the same fantastic outdoors experience with a little more physical intensity

Please note that you need to sign up at the Outdoor Adventures office for our trips no later than 5pm the day before the scheduled date. Open spots fill up quickly, so sign up as early as possible.

Policies

  • Trips are pet, alcohol, and drug free (in compliance with University policy).
  • Cancellations made less than 72 hours before a trip are not eligible for a refund.
  • Cancellations made more than 72 hours in advance but less than a week before the trip will receive credit for half the dollar amount toward a future trip or rental.
  • Cancellations made seven days or more prior to the trip will be eligible for a full refund minus a $10 processing fee. Alternatively, you may receive full credit toward a future trip.

August 29th - September 1st — Camp and Explore Lassen National Park

Lassen National Park

Information: Located at the very top of California, Lassen Volcanic National Park is home to one of California’s only volcanoes. This National Park contains two volcanic peaks within its boundaries. Neither has erupted since 1914. While the volcano is dormant as of now, the area still has plenty of geothermal activity. From hot springs and lava tubes, to a 700 ft volcanic cone, Lassen National Park has lots of interesting sights to explore. Come explore the park with us as we cook, camp, and hike through this incredible and unique wilderness.

September 12th - 14th — Camp and Explore Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park

Information: Wander through the pristine wilderness of Yosemite National Park, the first park to be designated as a Green Space by the United States Government. Yosemite is filled with a lifetime's worth of waterfalls and granite formations that fill the Valley that is referred to as the gem of the Sierra. Come sleep out under the stars with us as we spend a weekend exploring all the major spots of California's greatest treasure. During this weekend trip we'll cook, hike, and learn about the wonders of the one and only Yosemite Valley. All experience levels welcome.

September 12th — Paddle and Play Day at Castaic Lake

Castaic Lake

Information: Join us on the water as we enjoy a day in the sun at Castaic Lake! The CSUN Aquatics Facility is only a 30 minute drive north of campus, and has Kayaks, Canoes and Standup Paddle boards for us to play with. No experience is needed for any of the equipment as it is your choice to play or learn at your own pace. Our experienced instructors will be on site to help out in any way. Or simply grab a book and some SPF 50 and find some shade in the sand to spend your Friday relaxing.

September 19th - 21st — Kayak and Climb Eastern Sierra

Eastern Sierra

Information: What if we told you that you could have your cake and eat it too. If it's a trip your looking for that covers everything, boating, climbing, hiking, cooking, hot springs, star gazing, camp fires, and swimming, you found the right one. Come on up to Bishop California, between the Eastern Sierra, and the White Mountains as we do every Outdoor Activity you can dream up. Make the most out of the last days of sunshine before bunking down for the winter!

September 20th — Rock Climbing at Stoney Point

Stoney

Information: Slip on your shoes and tie in! Outdoor rock climbing is a mental and physical challenge anyone can enjoy, regardless of strength or fear of heights. A full-day venture into the local hills will introduce you to the thrill of rock climbing in a noncompetitive atmosphere. By the end of the day you should feel comfortable with basic climbing knots, belaying, and introductory rock movement techniques. We'll provide you with a variety of climbs for you to have fun and challenge yourself on. This is a great way to get away for the day whether you're a first-time climber or a repeat adventurer.

September 26th - 28th — Backpack Death Valley National Park

Death Valley

Information: Join Outdoor Adventures as we explore a national park containing spectacular desert scenery, complex geology, and undisturbed wilderness. Called the Land of Extremes, Death Valley is home to valleys created by ancient waterways, snowcapped mountains, and sand dunes. Our group will hike up a canyon series that follows a creek to Panamint, an old haunted ghost town once populated by gold miners and outlaws, where we'll spend the night amongst the tunnels and old mining equipment. This is one of our more challenging trips, so prepare to push your limits and take your backpacking skills to the next level.

September 28th — Canyoneering

An adventurer canyoneering

Information: Canyoneering is the activity of navigating a steep canyon with the use of rock climbing equipment and technical skills. One of our most difficult and most rewarding trip, the 8 mile round trip hike, rappel, swim, slide, hop and slip down the scenic Eaton Canyon in Pasadena is one of the most unforgettable locations in Southern California. After a 2 hour Rappelling workshop at the SRC Ridge Rockwall, you will have all the skills and abilities to successfully navigate your first canyon. This is a sport/activity/trip that we highly recommend having experienced guides leading, so take advantage of us, and let's explore together.

  • A 2 hour Rappelling workshop at the SRC Ridge Rockwall

October 3rd - 5th — Camp and Explore Sequoia National Park

Sequoia National Park

Information: Come spend a weekend enjoying some of the largest trees in the world! Have your breath taken away by the beautiful forest landscape and mountain scenery of Sequoia National Park, all while enjoying some great company! The numerous day hikes will explore the Giant Forest, alpine lakes, and panoramic views of the park. This trip is a fantastic way to escape the city life and experience nature at its best. If you haven't seen the wonders of General Sherman or the Great Western Divide there is no better time than now.

October 4th — Day Hike Mt. Baldy

Mt. Baldy

Information: Mount Baldy, Old Baldy, or more formally, Mount San Antonio — whatever you call this mountain, the trek to the summit is considered a rite of passage for SoCal hikers. Baldy towers over the San Gabriel Mountains and is the highest point in the range. The far-reaching panoramic views found at the exposed 10,064-foot summit attract plenty of hikers. There are two major routes to the top: The Baldy Bowl – Sky Hut Trail and the Baldy Notch – Devil's Backbone Trail. Both hikes depart from Manker Flats and can be combined into one scenic and challenging 11.3-mile loop with 3,900 feet of elevation gain.

October 10th - 12th — Advance Backpacking Sespe Wilderness

Sespe Wilderness

Information: Located just north of Ojai, Sespe Wilderness is the largest wilderness area within Los Padres National Forest, occupying 342 square miles. Sespe Creek cuts through this land and the adjacent trail offers great views of a wide valley and scenic creek. The trail starts from Piedra Blanca trailhead near Rose Valley Falls and leaves the dense green of the bays, oaks, and chaparral for grassland plains that feel surprisingly southwestern. Scattered groves along the creek provide shade for camping and picnicking, and there are several warm-water swimming holes to enjoy. As if that were not enough to justify the trek, there are also hot springs feeding into the creek. On this “advanced” backpacking trip we will share more advanced techniques, such as survival skills, Ultra Lite practices and get down into the nitty gritty of different pieces of gear.

October 12th — Bungee Jumping

An adventurer bungee jumping

Information: Imagine standing on the edge of a bridge with steep canyon walls rising above you. Your sweaty palms grip the rail, your throat is dry, and your heart beats so hard you can feel it through your chest. You feel a rush as adrenaline surges through your body. Looking down at the water ten stories below, you hear the encouragement of your friends standing next to you as the countdown begins. “5-4-3-2-1-BUNGEE!!!!” Welcome to the most exhilarating, adrenaline pumping activity in the world. Are you ready for the thrill of a lifetime? Join us for a ten mile round trip hike, a 100 ft jump all that make up one amazing life experience.

October 18th — Hike the Hollywood Sign

Hollywood sign

Information: The world famous Hollywood sign is one of the most iconic spots in all of Southern California. If you haven't gotten out on this nearby hike its time you do so. Designed for anyone and everyone this top tourist destination is a relaxing 3 mile round trip hike will take you to the sign for a photo op, and also to the Griffith observatory, a cutting edge planetarium. Treat yourself to a day off, get some exercise and see a new place on this fun and comfortable day.

October 17th - 19th — Camp and Explore Big Sur

Big Sur

Information: Come explore this amazing stretch of coastline and discover why Big Sur is said to be one of the most beautiful places in California. This trip begins with one of the most beautiful drives in California, up the Big Sur coast; there are panoramic coastal views, common sightings of elephant seals, and inland waterfalls that lead to the beach. We'll spend our first starlit night at a front-country campsite enjoying campfire activities and learning useful backpacking skills. The next two days will be spent hiking through the mountains of the Ventana Wilderness, high up on the Big Sur River, to Sykes Hot Springs. This trip is a great opportunity to learn basic backpacking skills, backcountry navigation, Leave No Trace ethics, backcountry cooking, and much more.

October 25th — Six Flags: Magic Mountain

Six Flags: Magic Mountain

Information: Six Flags Magic Mountain is a 262-acre theme park located in Valencia, Santa Clarita, California, north of Los Angeles. With 18 roller coasters, Six Flags Magic Mountain holds the world record for most roller coasters in an amusement park. In 2013, the park had over 2.8 million visitors ranking it sixth in attendance among seasonal amusement parks in North America. Come play and hang with us as we spend the day on Tiatsu, X2, Batman, and Goliath while munching on corn dogs an d trying to win a big stuffed animal.

October 24th - 26th — Road Trip Eastern Sierra

Eastern Sierra

Information: Time for a Road Trip! Join us as we drive up scenic 395 highways as we explore the lesser known but incredibly picturesque Eastern Sierra.. On this mutli day adventure we'll will cover some serious ground as we go through the Mojave Desert, past Mt. Whitney, Camp Manzanar, through the rock climber's mecca of Bishop, and past Mammoth area to Mono Lake. We'll stop and explore a little bit of everything, from short hikes to alpine lakes, some of the man-made attractions, hot springs, Mono Lake, and so much more. Get your cameras ready, and prepare to fall in love with the playground that is the Eastern Sierra. We will be camping out each night with homemade meals and campfires. This is a perfect trip for a first time camper or an experienced outdoors person looking to explore and learn about this massive and gorgeous landscape in a relatively short amount of time.

October 31st - November 2nd — Big Sur Kayak and Explore

Big Sur

Information: Twenty-six miles south of Carmel is Big Sur, the namesake of the drive. Surrounded by old growth redwood forest, Big Sur is a small coastal community with big opportunities for outdoor adventure. While sheer cliffs and stunning ocean views flank the west side of Highway 1, protected forest land lies just to the east, offering visitors an abundance of hiking opportunities. After we finish up on land we'll take to the water. The Elkhorn Slough is a dramatic backdrop for wildlife year-round-- home to otters, seals, sea lions, and an infinite variety of birds. It is home to saltwater, freshwater and marshland wildlife. Let our guides show you this amazing ecosystem via ocean Kayak, that are open and usable by all skill levels. You'll want to come back again and again.

November 2nd — Explore the Getty Museum

Getty Museum

Information: State of the art architecture, breathtaking views and vantage points, artistic gardens and one of the most impressive collections of beautifully displayed art in the world, the Getty Center is a cultural icon and landmark of California. Join us as we spend the day touring the Museum and all the opportunities and exhibits that it has to offer.

November 6th — Full Moon Night Hike

An adventurer on a full moon night hike

Information: LA is a city where nature will surprise you. Take a night off of studying and come take a relaxing hike through one of the great green spaces around Los Angeles. There is something surreal about walking beneath a full moon with the glow of the city lighting your path. All you need is a pair of shoes and water bottle to come explore the less traveled spots of LA.

November 7th - 9th — Mystery Backpacker

Information: Here at OA we think it is important to take risks, surprise yourself, and push yourself out of your comfort zone. In the words of John Muir: "I only went out for a walk, and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in." Take it from John Muir, put on a backpack and get going! We want to go out for a full weekend of backpacking in the wilderness of California. This trip is designed for beginners and experienced backpackers alike. Trust us on this one, it's gonna be awesome.

November 14th - 16th — Yoga Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree

Information: Let's go camping in our backyard National Park, Joshua Tree. We will do several hikes through the Martian landscape as we play and learn about the parks geology, history, and some naturalism of the surrounding area. After trekking through this wonderland of rocks we will cook and relax under the blanket of the starry night sky, as we tell stories and roast marshmallow around the campfire. There is no better way to relax and fully immerse yourself in a location than through the art of meditation and yoga which will be led by a certified instructor. First time or veteran camper/yogis are welcome to join our collaborative adventure into the desert.

November 15th — Heal the Bay: Venice Beach Clean Up

Information: Venice still remains the ultimate funky urban beach city it has always been. From the world-famous boardwalk, with its vendors and performers, to the tourist draw of Muscle Beach, Venice truly is a place like no other. Heal the Bay organization was founded on the principle that one person can make a difference, and has empowered over 100,000 volunteers to improve their environment and communities. Come represent CSUN and the Outdoor Community as we help clean up the beach, then do a little swim, tan and hang out after.

November 15th — Whale Watching

Stoney

Information: It's migratory time and whales are moving down to the warmer water of the equator and they are feeling photogenic. We'll charter a boat and set sail on the high seas in search of them. Whales, dolphins, seals and other sea life await us as we explore the Pacific Ocean during this comfortable day trip. A snack, warm jacket, and adventurous spirit is all you will need during this perfect day off of school.

November 27th - 30th — Canoe the Colorado River: Black Canyon to Hoover Dam

Black Canyon

Information: Canoe the gentle current of the majestic Colorado River through a sculpted black and red walled canyon. You'll be self-contained, with only the gear in your boat, as we embark on a three-day journey to scout for big horn sheep standing on sheer cliff walls, experience secluded sauna caves, leap from the surrounding cliffs and float beneath the towering monolith of the Hoover Dam. At night, we'll gather around a campfire and then hike to hot springs nestled within a narrow canyon pass. Nature doesn't get any better than this. Prepare to learn the basics of camping, canoeing a little bit about this amazing juncture of natural and man-made wonders.

November 27th - 30th — Camp and Explore the Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon

Information: Take a mid-semester break and let us take you to the world famous Grand Canyon all the way in Arizona. In this rugged land carved by years and years of wind and water, we'll explore the iconic scenes that you may have seen in documentaries, post cards and national geographic magazines. Together we'll discover the Canyon and its rich geological and geographic history as well as the basics of camping.

November 27th - 30th — Camp and Explore Zion National Park

Zion National Park

Information: Of the 14 National and State Parks of Utah, Zion is the crown jewel. From Angels landing to the world famous slot canyon named “the Narrows” we'll explore it all on our multiday camping and hiking trip. Get your boots and cameras ready for some long, scenic day hikes among this sandstone wonderland. At night we'll gather around the campfire to share stories and watch the stars. This trip is great for campers of any skill levels and together we'll learn the basics of camping, hiking, geology history of the park and leave no trace ethics.

December 18th - 21st — Canoe the Colorado River: Black Canyon to Hoover Dam

Black Canyon

Information: Canoe the gentle current of the majestic Colorado River through a sculpted black and red walled canyon. You'll be self-contained, with only the gear in your boat, as we embark on a three-day journey to scout for big horn sheep standing on sheer cliff walls, experience secluded sauna caves, leap from the surrounding cliffs and float beneath the towering monolith of the Hoover Dam. At night, we'll gather around a campfire and then hike to hot springs nestled within a narrow canyon pass. Nature doesn't get any better than this. Prepare to learn the basics of camping, canoeing a little bit about this amazing juncture of natural and man-made wonders.

Yosemite National Park

Information: Like the Native Americans and Explorers before us, ingenuity allows us to experience all types of nature. In this introductory weekend to snowshoeing and camping we'll brave freezing temps to discover and enjoy a winter wonderland. After learning technical skills an safe practices we'll spend most of the time sledding, having snowball fights, building snowmen and sipping on hot coco until the stars come out. Be prepared for the challenges and rewards of living in the snow during this snow camping expedition.
