Trips

Our programs are available to all current CSUN students, faculty, staff, alumni and their guests. We have trips for every skill level, from novice to expert. The guidelines below will help you select adventures that are right for you. If you’re unsure about your skill level, call or stop by the Outdoor Adventures office, and our friendly staff will help you.

Level 1: Adventure travel at its most relaxed pace for people seeking a remarkable experience with low intensity

Level 2: Great for outdoor novices and those new to active travel who are seeking more knowledge of the outdoor world

Level 3: Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts looking for stimulating adventure in the great outdoors

Level 4: Recommended for fit travelers with basic skills who want an exciting trip with the same fantastic outdoors experience with a little more physical intensity

Please note that you need to sign up at the Outdoor Adventures office for our trips no later than 5pm the day before the scheduled date. Open spots fill up quickly, so sign up as early as possible.

Policies

  • Trips are pet, alcohol, and drug free (in compliance with University policy).
  • Cancellations

      Multi day trip cancellations

      Cancellations made more than 8 days before the trip will be refunded for the full dollar amount, minus a 20% processing fee. Cancellations made less than 8 days before the trip are not eligible for a refund. Outdoor Adventures reserves the right to cancel any trip due to incompatible conditions for the activity. In the event Outdoor Adventures cancels the trip you will receive a full monetary refund.

      Single day trip cancellations

      Cancellations made more than 8 days before the trip will receive a refund for the full dollar amount minus a $10 processing fee. Cancellations made less than 8 days before the trip are not eligible for a refund. Outdoor Adventures reserves the right to cancel any trip due to incompatible conditions for the activity.       Special trip cancellations

      Special Trips are non-refundable. If you are unable to attend the trip, the paying participant is ineligible for a refund (monetary or credity) or transfer onto another trip. Outdoor Adventures reserves the right to cancel a trip due to incompatible conditions for the activity. In the event Outdoor Adventures cancels the trip you will receive a full monetary refund.

Disclaimer

Due to the nature of Outdoor Recreation all locations, activities and times are subject to change. We love the mother nature but sometimes she's hard to plan with. Weather, water levels, trail conditions, roads closures, and fires can change any trip with little warning. We appreciate the patience, understanding and flexibility of all parities involved in our outings. If changes need to be made we will update our information in a timely manner and will always notify registered participants as soon as possible.

Paddle and Play Day at Castaic Lake

Join us on the water as we enjoy a day in the sun at Castaic Lake! The CSUN Aquatics Facility is only a 30 minute drive north of campus, and has Kayaks, Canoes and Standup Paddle boards for us to play with. No experience is needed for any of the equipment as it is your choice to play or learn at your own pace. Our experienced instructors will be on site to help out in any way. Or simply grab a book and some SPF 50 and find some shade in the sand to spend your Friday relaxing.

9/4-9/7 — Caving Sequoia National Park

Caving Sequoia National Park

Come explore the depths of Sequoia National Park with us. Outdoor Adventures will team up with a professional guiding company in Sequoia national park to guide us through some of the expansive caves that the park is home to. Topside of the park, we’ll hike and explore sequoia groves, the mountain ranges and alpine lake while we eat good food, and sleep under the stars.

9/11-9/13 — Camp and Explore Yosemite National Park

Camp and Explore Yosemite National Park

Wander through the pristine wilderness of Yosemite National Park, the first park to be designated as a Green Space by the United States Government. Yosemite is filled with a lifetime’s worth of waterfalls and granite formations that fill the Valley that is referred to as the gem of the Sierra. Come sleep out under the stars with us as we spend a weekend exploring all the major spots of California’s greatest treasure. During this weekend trip we’ll cook, hike, and learn about the wonders of the one and only Yosemite Valley. All experience levels welcome.

9/12 — Venice Beach Shuttle

Venice Beach Shuttle

If you haven’t had the chance to check out the world Famous Venice Beach California, you are out of excuses. Run wild and free on the beaches of Venice, as you check out the various stores and vendors on your own, explore the skate park, volleyball or tennis courts, shoot some hoop, set up a slackline, go body surf the waves or simply throw down a beach chair and read a book, it’s a choose your own adventure kind of day.

9/13 — Hike the Hollywood Sign

Hike the Hollywood Sign

The world famous Hollywood sign is one of the most iconic spots in all of Southern California. If you haven’t gotten out on this nearby hike its time you do so. Designed for anyone and everyone this top tourist destination is a 6 mile round trip hike will take you to the base of the sign for a photo op then around to the backside of the landmark for sweeping panoramas of Los Angeles, the sweeping mountain ranges, Studio lots and the rest of the San Fernando Valley. Treat yourself to a day off, get some exercise and see a new place on this fun and landmark filled day.

9/18-9/20 — Kayak and Climb the Eastern Sierra

Kayak and Climb the Eastern Sierra

What if we told you that you could have your cake and eat it too? If it’s a trip you’re looking for that covers everything, boating, climbing, hiking, cooking, hot springs, star gazing, camp fires, and swimming, you found the right one. A 6 mile stretch of the lower Owens River or a paddle around Mono Lake awaits us, while the boulders of Happy Sads vie for our attention. Come on up to Bishop California, between the Eastern Sierra, and the White Mountains as we do every Outdoor Activity you can dream up. Make the most out of the last warm days as try to stretch winter out a little bit longer.

9/25 — Rock Climbing at Stone Point

Rock Climbing at Stone Point

Slip on your shoes and tie in! Outdoor rock climbing is a mental and physical challenge anyone can enjoy, regardless of strength or fear of heights. A full-day venture into the local hills will introduce you to the thrill of rock climbing in a noncompetitive atmosphere. By the end of the day you should feel comfortable with basic climbing knots, belaying, and introductory rock movement techniques. We’ll provide you with a variety of climbs for you to have fun and challenge yourself on. This is a great way to get away for the day whether you’re a first-time climber or a repeat adventurer.

9/25-9/27 — Backpacking Alpine Lakes Experience

Backpacking Alpine Lakes Experience

We watched ‘Into the Wild’, “127 Hours” and “Wild” and got inspired! OA wants to take you out to the world Famous Sierra Nevada Mountain Range to Backpack amongst the pines and aspen in search of glistening alpine lakes to kick back and relax by, in and on. Come with us and learn the ins and outs to the amazing, sport/hobby/exercise/passion that is backpacking. The feelings of accomplishment, empowerment, and connectedness with the natural world and friends around you will make this one unforgettable trip.

9/27 — Full Moon Night Hike

Full Moon Night Hike

LA is a city where nature will surprise you. Take a night off of studying and come take a relaxing hike through one of the great green spaces around Los Angeles. There is something surreal about walking beneath a full moon with the glow of the city lighting your path. All you need is a pair of shoes and water bottle to come explore the secret, less traveled spots of LA.

10/3 — Canyoneer Upper Eaton Canyon

Canyoneer Upper Eaton Canyon

The toughest trip that Outdoor Adventures has to offer just opened up again. Eaton Canyon, deemed too dangerous for regular hikers, has been permitted to CSUN OA to lead small groups of 6 individuals down 5+ waterfall repels, some over 60 feet tall into deep cold water pools. This true full day outing will have you up with sunrise and finishing with the sun setting. Be ready for the realest adventure we have to offer.

Beach Days with OA are the best. Let’s go picnic, play, surf, and snorkel, eat, play soccer, volleyball, baseball, read, lounge, sleep, tan, eat some more, swim, and hang out as we try to stretch the summer a little bit more. We’ll provide the transportation if you bring the kites and other toys.

Surf SoCal

When in California, do as the… Californians do. It is a common myth that we surf to classes, so come do your part in perpetuating awesome stereotypes and catch some swells out in the Pacific Ocean. We’ll be hooking up with a single day outfitter to have professional grad equipment and instruction as we learn how to hang ten, and hopefully not wipe out.

10/16-10/18 — Kayak and Snorkel La Jolla, San Diego

Kayak and Snorkel La Jolla, San Diego

Come join our adventure as we head to San Diego County to experience the beautiful La Jolla Cove and more! This journey will lead you to the wonderful views of Oceanside Camping. While camping on the gorgeous bluffs of Oceanside, we will overlook a sunset, and perhaps a sunrise, that will never fade from your memory. And that’s only Day 1! Day 2, we will venture further south to La Jolla, where the real fun begins. Be ready for an awesome tour while kayaking the open waters, with views of sea caves, cliffs, wildlife, and a seemingly never-ending horizon! Once we finish kayaking, lunch on the beach, with the sound of waves, and the fun of a few games will take over our day. That is, until we snorkel La Jolla cove, one of the most beautiful and popular snorkeling sites in all of Southern California! With these two awesome events, Day 2 will conclude only after a short drive to Palomar Mountain and our campground, with a densely shaded, fairytale-esque like atmosphere, made even better with a fire and some delicious food! Day 3 will signal the end of our journey together, but not before we complete a short hike up to the Palomar Observatory and see the 200 inch Hale Telescope, truly a sight to behold. A short drive back up the coast will have us arrive back at CSUN, officially ending our amazing, once-in-a-life time adventure together. Don’t miss out and sign up today!

10/17 — Peak Baggin’ Mount Baldy

Peak Baggin’ Mount Baldy

Mt. Baldy is one of the high elevation mountains in Southern California and we want to conquer him. Join us for this aggressive full day hike to some of the most beautiful views of the Greater Los Angeles area, check out the Baldy Ski hut and get our excise on out in nature, and maybe sneak in a waterfall photo op. So many locations and only so much time.

10/18 — Whale Watching

Whale Watching

It’s migratory time and whales are are feeling photogenic. We’ll jump aboard a large whale watching vessel with indoor cabin, snackbar, and toilets as set sail on the high seas in search of them. During our 2.5 hour tour we may see whales, dolphins, seals and other sea life as we explore the Pacific Ocean during this comfortable day trip. A snack, warm jacket, and adventurous spirit is all you will need to relax, snap some photos and kick back during this perfect day off from school.

Camp and Explore Big Sur

Come explore this amazing stretch of coastline and discover why Big Sur is said to be one of the most beautiful places in California. This trip begins with one of the most beautiful drives in California, up the Big Sur coast; there are panoramic coastal views, common sightings of elephant seals, and inland waterfalls that lead to the beach. This weekend outing will consist of elephant seals, a couple of the most scenic waterfalls California has to offer, walks on the beach, a pacific ocean swim, marshmallows, a roaring campfire, cozy tents, and a walk amongst the redwoods. 11/6-11/8 — Joshua Tree - Caves and Off Trail Travel

Joshua Tree - Caves and Off Trail Travel

Let’s go camping in our backyard National Park, Joshua Tree. We will do several hikes through the Martian landscape as we play and learn about the parks geology, history, and some naturalism of the surrounding area. After trekking through this wonderland of rocks we will cook and relax under the blanket of the starry night sky, as we tell stories and roast marshmallow around the campfire.

Malibu Creek Hike

Just 25 miles from downtown Los Angeles, the park features There are 15 miles of streamside trail through oak and sycamore woodlands on chaparral covered slopes. The park was the center of Chumash Native American life for centuries and was once used to film numerous movies and TV shows, such as Planet of the Apes and M*A*S*H. Get out of the class room, and breath some fresh air as we hike and play in our local parks!

Camp and Sand Sled Death Valley National Park

Join Outdoor Adventures as we explore a national park containing spectacular desert scenery, complex geology, and undisturbed wilderness. Called the Land of Extremes, Death Valley is home to valleys created by ancient waterways, snowcapped mountains, and sand dunes. Together we will go on several short hikes around the park, slip, slide and roll around on the sand dunes, then at night we’ll cook some pretty amazing meals, as we hang out around the campfire under a blanket of stars. The lowest point in North America, is sure to be the highest point of your Fall Semester.

The world famous Hollywood sign is one of the most iconic spots in all of Southern California. If you haven’t gotten out on this nearby hike its time you do so. Designed for anyone and everyone this top tourist destination is a 6 mile round trip hike will take you to the base of the sign for a photo op then around to the backside of the landmark for sweeping panoramas of Los Angeles, the sweeping mountain ranges, Studio lots and the rest of the San Fernando Valley. Treat yourself to a day off, get some exercise and see a new place on this fun and landmark filled day.

Camp and Explore Zion National Park

Of the 14 National and State Parks of Utah, Zion is the crown jewel. From Angels landing to the world famous slot canyon named “the Narrows” we’ll explore it all on our multiday camping and hiking trip. Get your boots and cameras ready for some long, scenic day hikes among this sandstone wonderland. At night we’ll gather around the campfire to share stories and watch the stars. This trip is great for campers of any skill levels and together we’ll learn the basics of camping, hiking, geology history of the park and leave no trace ethics.

Backpack Big Sur

Come explore this amazing stretch of coastline and discover why Big Sur is said to be one of the most beautiful places in California. This trip begins with one of the most beautiful drives in California, up the Big Sur coast; there are panoramic coastal views, common sightings of elephant seals, and inland waterfalls that lead to the beach. We'll spend our first starlit night at a front-country campsite enjoying campfire activities and learning useful backpacking skills. The next two days will be spent hiking through the mountains of the Ventana Wilderness, high up on the Big Sur River, to Sykes Hot Springs. This trip is a great opportunity to learn basic backpacking skills, backcountry navigation, Leave No Trace ethics, backcountry cooking, and much more.

Canoe the Colorado River: Black Canyon to Hoover Dam

Canoe the gentle current of the majestic Colorado River through a sculpted black and red walled canyon. You’ll be self-contained, with only the gear in your boat, as we embark on a three-day journey to scout for big horn sheep standing on sheer cliff walls, experience secluded sauna caves, leap from the surrounding cliffs and float beneath the towering monolith of the Hoover Dam. At night, we’ll gather around a campfire and then hike to hot springs nestled within a narrow canyon pass. Nature doesn’t get any better than this. Prepare to learn the basics of camping, canoeing a little bit about this amazing juncture of natural and man-made wonders.

Snowshoe Backpack the Sierra

Like the Native Americans and Explorers before us, ingenuity allows us to experience all types of nature. In this introductory weekend to snowshoeing and camping we’ll brave freezing temps to discover and enjoy a winter wonderland. After learning technical skills and safe practices we’ll spend most of the time sledding, having snowball fights, building snow shelters, and constructing snowmen and sipping on hot coco until the stars come out. Be prepared for the challenges and rewards of living a Sierra Winter during this snow camping expedition.
