Eighteenth Annual High School Invitational exhibition
January 12 – 31, 2015

Reception: Friday, January 30, 2015 from 7-9 pm.

In it's 18th year, the CSUN Art Galleries is hosting its Annual High School Art Invitational from January 12 through 31, 2015.  The exhibition showcases work made by students from nearly 40 public and private high schools in the San Fernando Valley.  Selected by members of each school's art faculty, each school may invite up to six students to participate by submitting one work each.  Only works from the spring and fall, 2014 terms are eligible. The exhibition features over 200 works and encompasses a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, illustration, photograph and animation.  The lively and ever popular artist's reception will be held on Friday, January 30 from 7-9pm.

For the sixth year in a row, we will be inviting high school teachers this year to have artwork displayed during the run of our 18th Annual High School Student Art Invitational. As with last year, the 5th Annual High School Teacher Art Invitational will be on view in the West Gallery, which is off the Main Gallery lobby.

Gallery Talk, Monday February 16 10 am

Opening February 14, the exhibition entitled Telegraph Art Collective “Tin Can Transmissions-Ten Years in the Making”, marks the ten-year anniversary of this nebulous and divergent collective of artists. Comprised of seven members with diverse disciplinary backgrounds, Telegraph is an artist collective that originated in Detroit, Michigan. Telegraph Art Collective is: Hartmut Austen, Haley Renée Bates, Fabio J. Fernández, Shannon Goff, Tom Lauerman, Brent Sommerhauser,Christian Tedeschi.

The name Telegraph describes both the group’s long-distance method of collaboration (the members are now scattered throughout the USA), and pays homage to Telegraph Road, the ubiquitous Detroit thoroughfare. The collective functions as a running conversation, typically conducted at long range. Occasionally the group materializes and collects in one location to collaborate on projects and exhibitions.

This exhibition will involve a variety of objects, installations and interventions created entirely on site. Utilizing the CSUN facilities and working closely with student artists, members of Telegraph will respond directly to the site and it’s conditions. The artists will be in residence in the CSUN Art Galleries ten days prior to the opening of the exhibition and will be hosting workshops and lectures as the exhibition unfolds.
Telegraph made its exhibition debut at the Art Chicago Stray Show in May 2004, and has since organized several exhibitions scattered about North America. The artists of Telegraph continue to exhibit individually at galleries and museums both nationally and abroad.
