APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Each candidate should complete the following steps:

  • Fill out a university application form online at www.csumentor.edu

  • Arrange for official copies of your transcripts to be sent directly to the CSUN Office of Admissions and Records. Official transcripts cannot be delivered by the applicant. Do not send them to the Journalism Department

  • Write a formal letter of application including your biographical, education, and professional backgrounds. Also include your career goal. You may include examples of published writing. This letter should be mailed directly to the Department of Journalism’s Graduate Advisor

  • Sign up to take the Graduate Record Exam. Information about this test can be obtained from the Graduate Studies Office or from www.gre.com. Please take this exam at your earliest convenience.

  • Ask two to three people – either faculty members, employers, or others familiar with your work – to write letters of recommendation addressing your potential as a graduate student. These should be sent directly to the Department’s Graduate Advisor.

  • Once you have enrolled, apply to take the Upper Division Writing Exam. After you have taken and passed the exam and met other requirements for classification, notify the Journalism office that you want to apply for classification. Please bring evidence of having passed the writing exam with you at that time. You will need to apply for classified status as soon as requirements are met and before you have taken 12 units.

International students whose native language is other than English are required to take the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL). On the computerized version you must score a minimum of 230. The Department gives preference to candidates who score significantly above the minimum. Results should be sent directly to the Office of Admissions and Records.
