Qualifications: The Department of Anthropology
at California State University, Northridge invites applications
for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor,
beginning Fall Semester 2006, in Archaeology with a specialization
in California and/or the Southwest. Applicants must have a Ph.D.
in hand, or near completion, at time of appointment. Applicants
that do not have a Ph.D. at time of appointment will be appointed
as a one-year lecturer and converted to tenure track at completion
of the doctorate. A Ph.D. will be required for the granting of
tenure. The successful applicant will be one who has evidence
of teaching excellence and research potential and be able to offer
courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants
must also be able to facilitate local fieldwork opportunities
for students, have a strong, theoretically-based research interest
in forager studies, economic and political organization in non-hierarchical
societies, and/or emergent cultural complexity, and a research/practice
focus on cultural resources management and/or heritage policy
and preservation issues. CSUN is a Learning Centered University.
The successful candidate will be expected to join faculty and
staff in a commitment to active learning, to the assessment of
learning outcomes, and to multiple pathways that enable students
to graduate. At time of appointment, the successful applicant,
if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau
of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United
States.
Responsibilities: The normal teaching load is 12
units per semester, although a reduced teaching load is available
the first year of appointment. The successful candidate will teach
and mentor a highly diverse student population, and participate
actively in community and university service. He or she will be
responsible for undergraduate courses in Human Origin and Culture,
Indians of North America, Indians of California and the Southwest,
Prehistoric Archeology, Archeology of North America, and for graduate
courses in Management of Cultural Resources (seminar), Lab Methods
in Archeology, California Archeology, Problems in Archeology (seminar),
and a Practicum in Cultural Resource Management.
