Second Bachelor's Degree

If you're already pursuing a second bachelor's degree at Cal State Northridge, this page is for you. Earning a second bachelor's degree takes a few special steps to meet degree requirements and apply to graduate.

Requirements

Students seeking a second bachelor's degree must meet all degree requirements based on whether they received their first bachelor's degree from CSUN or from another regionally accredited institution. Choose your group and read on.

CSUN graduates seeking a Second Bachelor's Degree

Students seeking a second bachelor's degree at CSUN, after having received a baccalaureate degree from the University, must do all of the following:

  • Complete a minimum of 24 Upper Division units in residence at CSUN since completion of the most recent degree, of which at least 12 units must be in the major. Completion of the major may require more than 12 units.
  • Complete the Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam (UDWPE) requirement. Second bachelor's students in the Nursing major do not need to complete the UDWPE requirement.
  • Complete all units required in the major. Graduate level courses (500-600) may not be applied toward second bachelor's degree requirements, nor can coursework taken to meet the second bachelor's degree apply toward a master's degree.
  • Maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in the major and 2.0 in all units attempted at CSUN since the awarding of the last degree.
  • File an Application for Bachelor's Degree and Diploma.

Transfer graduates seeking a Second Bachelor's Degree

Students seeking a second bachelor's degree from CSUN, after having received a baccalaureate degree from another accredited institution, must do all of the following:

  • Complete at least 30 units in residence at CSUN since completion of the first bachelor's degree, including 24 Upper-Division units and at least 12 units in the major. Completion of the major may require more than 12 units.
  • Complete the Upper-Division Writing Proficiency requirement. Second bachelor's students the Nursing major do not need to complete the UDWPE requirement.
  • Complete all units required in the major. Graduate level courses (500-600) may not be applied toward second bachelor degree requirements, nor can coursework taken to meet the second bachelor's degree apply toward a master's degree.

Applying for Your Second Bachelor's Degree

Approximately one year before you plan to complete the major program for your second bachelor's degree, file an "Application for Bachelor's Degree and Diploma" with Undergraduate Degree Services.

An online graduation evaluation, a Degree Progress Report (DPR) , and My Plan to Graduate (MPG) are not available to 2nd Bachelor’s Students. Therefore, graduation evaluations will be mailed to the address on record. Verify and update your address now using the Address Correction or Change Form or log into myNorthridge and select Home tab > Quick Links box > SOLAR Student Center > Personal Information.
