Admitted First-Time Freshman

Congratulations and welcome to California State University, Northridge!

Your next steps depend on your situation.  Are you an F-1 or J-1 visa student? Will you be coming to CSUN from inside or outside the United States? Follow the directions for your student group below.

J-1 Visa Students

Review the immigration requirements and other information on the International and Exchange Student Center (IESC) website at new J-1 students.

When your Form DS-2019 is ready, you may obtain it as follows:

  • If you are residing outside the U.S. at the time of admission, your DS-2019 will be mailed to you.
  • If you are visiting the U.S. at the time of admission, you may arrange to pick up your DS-2019 and your admission materials from our Office of International Admissions before you leave the U.S. Alternatively, you may leave us your forwarding address.

F-1 Visa Students

Select your student group below to read the requirements for your situation:

First-Time Freshman from Inside the U.S.

Form I-20 and SEVIS Record

You will receive a preliminary letter of admission asking you to notify your high school advisor to transfer your SEVIS record to CSUN. About two or three business days after your prior school releases you in the SEVIS database, your Form I-20 will be available for you to pick up from our Office of International Admissions.

  • If you prefer that we hold your I-20 for a friend or family member to pick up, please let us know as soon as possible.
  • If no one is available to pick up your I-20, you can mail or carry a self-addressed, pre-paid envelope to the Office of International Admissions. NOTE: We will not release your I-20 to any express mail companies without a self-addressed, pre-paid envelope.

Visa and Immigration Advisement

You will also receive instructions via email from CSUN's International and Exchange Student Center (IESC) to complete the mandatory online session called the Six-Step Immigration Requirements.

Placement Tests

Placement tests do not affect your admission but place you into the English writing and mathematics classes that match your skill level. You will receive test information for the English Placement Test (EPT) and the mathematics assessment.

Take the English Placement Test (EPT) at your earliest convenience at CSUN, another CSU or out of state. If you cannot arrange an early test date, you must take EPT at CSUN on:

  • Wednesday, January 14, 2015 for Spring 2015
  • Wednesday, August 19, 2015 for Fall 2015

For EPT test dates, locations and online registration, visit the Educational Testing Service website or visit the CSUN Testing Center EPT page.

The international academic advisor for new students will send you information about the mathematics assessment. More information is provided beginning with Step 6 (page 6) of the New International Student Checklist section Online Information Workshop.

Academic Advisement
