Cal State Northridge Takes Lead in Russian Strategic Language Initiative Program in the Summer of 2009
California State University, Northridge, takes the lead in Strategic Language Initiative Program in Russian this year among five other CSU campuses in a multi-million-dollar federally funded project to teach strategic languages.
The Strategic Language Initiative (SLI) Program of the Southern Consortium of California State Universities (SCCSU) brings together the infrastructure and language faculty expertise of Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State LA, Cal State Northridge, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State San Bernardino.
The Cal State Northridge (CSUN) has created and will begin offering this summer intensive and highly demanding program in RUSSIAN language that integrate language learning with academic majors for career opportunities in government and industry professions. The deadline for interested students to apply for Russian language program is April 21.
CSUN will host a summer intensive language immersion program in the summer of 2009, offering Russian for heritage speakers and for non-heritage speakers. The program offers six weeks of language classes and conversation practice five days a week plus language and culture activities during the entire day. Since this is a residential program, language learning and culture building will occur throughout the week, including evening activities and excursions.

This unique program is part of the federally funded Strategic Language Initiative designed to provide selected students with an opportunity to study languages – among them Russian. Students who are accepted into this highly competitive program will devote six weeks during CSU summer 2009 in a residential immersion program at CSUN. This learning experience will be followed in academic year 2009-10 with a set of individualized courses in Russian language with relevance to the student’s major. The program culminates with a 6-week study abroad in Russia.
THE 2009 SUMMER PROGRAM
Six-week, residential immersion program in Russian with instruction, textbooks, room and board, and field trips. Financial assistance is available.

Location: Campus of California State University, Northridge
Duration: June 8 – July 17, 2009
ELIGIBILITY:
Must be a heritage or non-heritage non-native speaker. There will be a screening test before selecting the participants, who will be expected to achieve Intermediate fluency level at the end of the Summer program. Priority is given to current CSU students followed by those from California community colleges and Universities of California. Selected participants must commit to fully apply themselves to the goals of the program and to follow it to completion
