Men’s Literature: Preliminary Gender Quiz

Our current academic culture is highly feminized and typically constructs traditional masculinity as only bad and traditional femininity as only good. We therefore begin gender studies more familiar with the traditional attributes of the “Bad Father” and the “Good Mother” listed below. Can you fill in the missing “Good Father” and “Bad Mother” attributes? Which is harder to do? (These are more like contraries than opposites. For example, the missing contrary to the “Earth-Soul Grounder” of the Good Mother is not a “sky-oriented” mother, but a mother who fixes one too firmly in the ground or in the material matter of life. i.e.., a “Supressor.”) How has the feminine been redefined in your courses? Has the masculine been redefined? What’s missing from the current construction of masculinity in the University or in your courses, or in American society at large? You might want to post your comments in the Message Forum.
