Catching Up With Scott Drake

Scott and Jenny came to Hume following service with Christian Heritage College in San Diego. Scott was the women's head volleyball coach and Jenny was the woman's soccer coach, and together they were the Resident Directors of a student dorm.

Scott's family has a long tradition at Hume. They own a cabin and Scott's dad, John, has been a long-time member and past chair of the Board of Directors. Scott spent every summer of his childhood at Hume, joining the staff as a dishwasher when he was 14. After four years of dishes, he progressed to seasons on night Guest Services, Security, Summer Counseling Staff, High Adventure, Maintenance, weekend work, Outdoor Education, Subdivision construction, and finally Wildwood staff the summer of 1998.

Scott played three years of high school volleyball, four years in college, two years on the Junior National team, one summer on a traveling team in Europe, and one summer on the Pro Beach Volleyball Circuit on which Scott estimates he earned $50. Along the way, he earned his interdisciplinary degree in Biology, Geology, and Physical Anthropology from U.C. Santa Barbara, while coaching volleyball at Westmont College.

Jenny grew up in Hawaii where surfing and soccer were her primary interests. She attended four years at Westmont College where she earned her degree in English. She played four years of soccer at Westmont where she helped win four conference championships, and was named conference player of the year. Due to a cancelled missions trip, she ended up at Hume for the summer of 1998 where she worked in Foxes Den and stayed on for fall Outdoor Education.

Although Scott and Jenny knew each other at Westmont, Jenny was dating one of Scott's friends. Scott always thought of her as just a little sister. On July 4th of their Hume summer together, Jenny finally told Scott that she and his friend had broken up. Scott and Jenny's first unofficial date was to Boyden's Cave. They became engaged on New Year's Eve 1998 at the Iron Creek campfire and were married in Hawaii in March of 1999. Shortly thereafter, they took a six-week extended honeymoon driving across the United States.

Scott currently works in Hume Lake's Utilities Department. Jenny finished her student teaching at the Hume School and became the K-2 teacher. This past August, Scott and Jenny began a family, welcoming Emma Louise Drake.

When asked why they desire to work in the ministry of Hume, Scott stated, "Hume is home, it's where the family rallies. Over the many years, I have seen what Hume has done and the lives it has touched. We are excited about the directions Hume is heading, about the volume of significant impact it is making, and we want to be a part of it."

Scott's quote on what the Hume Lake Volleyball Tournament has meant to him:
"The friendships made at the Hume Lake Volleyball Tournament are unparalleled and the opportunity to introduce people to Christ through the ministry of Hume Lake Christian Camps is priceless. I've had many great experiences playing ball in my life, but none can compare with those in the Hume Lake Volleyball Tournament."

Check back soon for an update on somebody new. We will continue to post updates of people who have played or continue to play in the Hume Volleyball Tournament.
