YOUR YAHOO GROUP

In order to participate in the discussion group, each person in the course must register with Yahoo.com and subscribe to the appropriate group. This is NOT optional. It is absolutely REQUIRED.

Take the following steps:
  1. If you are already a member of Yahoo Groups, just click on the appropriate button below, which will take you to the correct group. You will see, at the upper right of the screen, near the top (but not at the absolute top) a button labeled "Join this Group". Click on it, and you are in.

  2. If you are NOT already a member of Yahoo Groups, just click on the appropriate button below, which will take you to the correct group. You will see, at the upper right of the screen, near the top (but not at the absolute top) a button labeled "Join this Group". Click on it . Another screen will appear temporarily. You will be asked to register with Yahoo. There will be an electronic form to fill out, asking you to provide a screen name, your own choice of a secret password, and an email address. As an email address, you can use your CSUN address, or a private email address, or the email address that Yahoo gives you automatically when you register. Your choice. Beware the little checked box somewhere on the form, in which you agree to receive all sorts of spam from their advertisers. Unclick it, unless you love spam (and I am not referring to the luncheon meat). As part of the registration, you get a free yahoo.com email address. Use it or not, as you please.

    You will receive emails from time to time from the Instructor. These will include notices of upcoming quizzes and exams, with study guides. Also, the midterm and final paper questions and instructions will be sent by the same email process. Copies of each of these emails will also be posted on the Yahoo Message Board in this Yahoo Group. So, if for some reason your email is not working properly, you can also find the email messages by going to the Message Board. If it should happen that the Instructor is unable to give the class lecture on a particular day and decides to cancel the class, an email message will be sent to each student, and a copy posted on the Message Board.

  3. When our first exercise begins in Week IV:

    (a) Read the messages on the group that other people are posting. You get to the messages by going to:

8:00 section
or
9:00 section
or
12:00 section

(You can click on one of the months of the calendar toward the bottom of the screen to start the list of messages;
each message has a separate number.)

(b) Respond to the messages of other students, by clicking on the "Reply" button at the bottom of the message;
(c) Start new topics yourself, by clicking on the "Post" word at the left of the screen under "Messages".

Once you gain access to a group, BOOKMARK the group in your browser.

You will be graded in this exercise at the end of the term. Your grade (25% of the Course Grade) will be based on: (a) the number of your posts on each topic; (b) the quality of your posts on each topic. Quality is determined by the original content of your own ideas and thoughts. Cutting and pasting other peoples' thoughts from elsewhere on the Internet is allowed and encouraged (like notes and footnotes in a written paper), but you do not get much positive credit for other peoples' ideas.
