Course Description
The purpose of this course is to acquaint you with new ways of thinking about women and gender. More specifically making sense of women’s experiences. Throughout this venture, we will take a critical look at how women’s roles both past and present limit our choices and impinge upon our personal well-being. We will begin by examining the social construction of gender roles and the ways in which we learn the cultural rules and roles we are expected to follow. From there we will explore issues that pertain to women including race, ethnicity and social class, heterosexism, violence against women and how women resist oppression.
This course is also designed to provide you with female role models from both the present and the past. You will be introduced to a variety of women who have lived extraordinary lives and who have made major contributions to society. It is my hope that these women will inspire you to live your own lives to the fullest.
Introduction to Women’s Studies is a Survey Course. What this means is that we will touch upon many different issues, and our lectures will be drawn from a variety of different academic disciplines such as: Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, History and Art.
I also want you to think about your individual place in history in relation to Women’s issues. How do women’s lives differ from that of your mother and grandmothers? Notice what you notice.
