If this is your first experience using HTML, it may seem frustrating at first.
It will get easier as time goes on; the best way to improve your HTML skills
is to keep doing it. Below are some links to useful websites that will help
you develop your skills further.
Webmonkey: Pay special attention to
the HTML
Cheat Sheet, which will give you the skinny on all the various HTML tags,
and the Color
Codes, in case you want to play with colors other than the primary ones.
CSUN Beginner's
Guide to HTML: Those
of you actually paying attention will notice that this is the required
reading for the course! This covers the basics of coding in HTML.
Pay special attention to "Creating
an HTML File," which covers much of what we will cover in the
computer lab. Also very useful is this guide to Publishing
Your Document on the Web. Also, this sample
document might be useful as a template for your pages. Copy
and paste it into your text editor!
All these instructions relate to publishing on the CSUN server. While it
is possible to upload pages to other sites, you will have to figure out how
to do that yourself through your internet service provider.
Having trouble with FTP? FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol;
it is the preferred method for uploading your web
pages to the server. This
guide describes the FTP protocol and a number of tools to help you use it.
If you would prefer to learn web programming
by following a step-by-step "crash course," allow
me to recommend Steven Stepanek's no-nonsense
guide. Some students may find Phillip Greenspun's "Learn
HTML in 21 Minutes" easier to use.
If you just
want some random tips on HTML check out this
list at coolarchive.
Coolarchive is also a great place to find free
graphics as well.
Images & Graphics:
Here's some free
graphicsresources for
web designers.
Can't afford Photoshop? There's a free image manipulation
program called the
Gimp that is almost as powerful as Photoshop.
There's a Windows
version as well as a Mac version.
