joel.zeitlin@csun.edu http://www.csun.edu/~vcmth02qTEXT: D. Hughes-Hallett & A. Gleason, et al, Calculus, Wiley, 3
rd Ed. Get the new edition so that page and problem numbers are accurate. It is not required, to have taken 150A from this book.REQUIRED: TI 85 graphing calculator in class, on homework and on tests. (If you already have another programmable graphing calculator I'll try to help --no promises that I'll be able to solve your problems).
No TI 89 or 92’s on tests.
COURSE CONTENT: Chapters VII- X with some changes. Some sections may be left out or added depending on time. If time permits we may start on vectors and parametric curves and … differential equations.
PHILOSOPHY & GOALS: Students will develp competence in reasoning and solving problems in calculus and will be prepared for future courses which involve calculation and theory. Formal definitions evolve from calculations and observations of examples--the rules follow from investigations. You will be responsible for some independent work—to understand the material and do test problems you must work on the material on your own. I will expect you to look at the section and see what the idea and topic are ahead of time. Afterwards and for independent coverage, you will need to read the text carefully.
GRADES:
·
+/- are used when appropriate. Total points on a relative scale unless there is uniformly good or bad performance.·
brief quizzes Fridays. 1 hour end of chapter tests. No makeups--they are inconvenient and unfair to others. You can drop your lowest quiz (more if we have at least 7) and your lowest 1 hour test.·
total points = Tests + Quizzes + Homework + FinalEstimated points: 300 + 200 + 150 + 200 = 850
·
Homework is required--if you get all A's but don't do HW you will not get an A in the course since you will be missing all of the possible points from homework. I am planning to require a project.·
No late homework--even if you have a doctors note, etc. You can mail (or email) homework in with an early date of mailing or drop it off in the math department before class if you cannot be in class.·
Late arrivals to class should turn in their papers quietly rather than waiting while the material is covered in class.
