Academy High School Project Fact Sheet

CONCEPT:  A Los Angeles Unified School District-Cal State Northridge proposal to develop a small, model “academy high school” for local Valley students with a focus on preparing students for college and future teaching careers.

WHY THIS PROJECT:  The high school will help meet the need for new high school classrooms in the Valley and help lessen overcrowding.  The school also will educate future teachers by partnering with CSUN, which has the largest public university teacher preparation program in California.

COMMUNITY SIGNIFICANCE:  The project will be the first new LAUSD high school in the Valley in nearly 30 years, and the only LAUSD high school sited on a university campus. The school’s students will gain shared use of the CSUN library and other university facilities.

LOCATION:  CSUN’s five-acre Zelzah Court site, surrounded on three sides by the CSUN campus and enclosed for security.  West side of Zelzah Avenue north of Halsted Street.

LAUSD ADVANTAGES:  CSUN site is undeveloped and available for use, will not require removal of homes or businesses, and serves an area in need of extra school capacity.  No site acquisition costs, through the exchange of the Prairie Street School site to CSUN.

CSUN ADVANTAGES:  Furthers CSUN commitment to helping increase the state’s supply of high-quality teachers.  Opportunities for joint academic planning between LAUSD and CSUN.  High school students will have a natural, convenient path to higher education.

PROJECT SCHEDULE:  Construction start by spring 2002, completion by 2004.

ENROLLMENT:  Approximately 800-student capacity (at any one time) on a year-round schedule.  Ninth through twelfth-grade students will come from the attendance zones of Monroe, Granada Hills and Cleveland high schools, helping reduce overcrowding at those campuses.

ACADEMIC FOCUS:  Preparing students for college and teaching careers.  Within that context, the school will have subject tracks in visual arts and media, and health and human services.  Students also will graduate highly proficient in math, science and foreign languages.

ADMISSION CRITERIA:  Students will apply to enroll in the school, and will be considered based on their interest in teaching careers, academic background and motivation.  The school will have a minimum required grade point average to apply.

PARKING & TRANSPORTATION:  LAUSD will provide on-site parking to satisfy the school’s student and staff needs.  No LAUSD busing of regular students is expected.  CSUN will improve its own campus parking supply through the acquisition from LAUSD of the nearby former Prairie Street elementary school site.
