The Society of Physics Students Presents:
Dr. Nina Byers
Of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCLA
We are fortunate enough to have Dr. Byers come to our campus to give her
talk on women in science and math. Dr.
Byers is a very successful physicist and additionally well known for her
knowledge in the history of women in math and science. She maintains an amazing web site titled Contributions of 20th Century
Women in Physics, which can be found at http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~cwp/
.
Please take this opportunity to hear about the impressive achievements
of women in math in science from a woman physicist who is a prime example of
such achievement.

ABSTRACT
Where Have All the Girls Gone?
Physics
as we know it began with Tycho Brahe, Galileo Galilei and others at the end of
the 16th century. Not until toward the end of the 19th century do we see female
physicists' names in the history of our subject but then in increasing numbers
we see women as major players in the development of physics, and mathematics.
Clearly this is not owing to biological differences between men and women, so
how are we to understand it? This talk
will be concerned with answering this question, and about the scientific lives
of several women who have made very important contributions to the physics of
today.
