Kicks-off Justice Corps Program...
California
is experiencing an explosion in the number of individuals
appearing in court without
legal representation
on a variety of matters from family law to housing issues.
The majority of these individuals are not obtaining professional
help because they cannot afford it. Resources available
to meet the needs of these “self-represented” individuals
are sorely lacking. In fact, the ratio of people to legal
aid attorneys in California is 10,000 to one. What is JusticeCorps?
Funded through an AmeriCorps grant, JusticeCorps is a
collaborative project of the California Administrative
Office of the Courts; the Superior Court of California,
County of Los Angeles; California State University at Northridge;
California State University at Dominguez Hills; University
of California at Los Angeles; and California State Polytechnic
University, Pomona. Approximately 100 JusticeCorps members will be recruited
from these local universities to provide assistance in
ten Los Angeles area Self-Help Legal Access Centers and
with the LA County Department of Consumer Affairs Small
Claims Advisor. Members will be trained to provide legal
assistance through one-on-one direct contact with litigants,
legal workshops, and computer terminals designed to assist
litigants in completing forms.
