What
Are CSL Classes Doing?
- Professor
Ric Alviso teaches "Music from a Global
Perspective" and "Ethnic
Music from the United States." The service-learning students from each
class present in-class lessons, which include a lecture, music samples,
video aides
and a live demonstration featuring the music of a foreign country. CSUN
students appropriately modify the material and present world music tutorials
to either
elementary or middle school students throughout the area.
- Professor
Deborah Cours teaches "Small Business
Consulting." Service-learning students in this
course do consulting work with the Small Business
Development
Center (SBDC), a non-profit organization serving
the North Los Angeles County. They help local
small businesses
develop and implement marketing plans that will
make them more viable establishments.
- Professor
Rafi Efrat added a service-learning project entitled "Researching Business Law Issues and Documenting
Business Transactions" to one of his core business
law classes. His students integrate the legal theories
and principles they are learning with real-life legal
problems of small businesses. They research and write
drafts of documents needed to resolve the
clients’ issues and present memoranda of their conclusions and recommendations.
- Professor
Bobbi Eisenstock leads her service-learning students
in a program
called "Creating Critical Thinkers in the Media Age: A Workshop for Teachers." Service-learning
students create mini-lessons on media literacy for elementary, middle and high
school teachers in the community. The students teach the teachers how to deconstruct
messages from advertising, TV shows, movies, popular music, video games, newspapers,
magazines, and the Internet. Teachers receive a "tool kit" prepared by the
service learners to foster critical thinkers in the media age.
And there are many more like these. The Center
for Community Service-Learning is eager to help you take
a course in your discipline that lets you learn while
you serve.
