Partners with Special Olympics
CSUN
Students studying genetics through classes lead by Dr.
Virginia
Vandergon and Dr. Rheem Medh have partnered with the
Tri-Valley Special Olympics. As a part of their service-learning
component, students have the opportunity to serve as
an assistant coach for several different sports. The
purpose of the activity is for the students to gain a
first-hand experience of working with people living
with the same genetic disabilities they are studying
in class. Their experience is complimented with a reflection
journal they wil submit the describes what they have
gained outside of the class.
As a second
year partner, the Tri-Valley Special Olympics has been
able to accomodate several CSUN students interested
in donating their time to the sport of their choice. With
sports including basketball, tennis, bocce ball, and equestrian,
students do not need any experience to participate. Each
Assitant Coach is expected to assist the Head Coach of
their sport with encouraging each Olympian to do their
best.
