(YSS)

Mission Statement

Working in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Probation Department to reduce recidivism through, assisting the Deputy Probation Officers (DPO) in expediting the transition of juveniles on probation into the community.

Qualifications for being a YSS worker

Must currently be enrolled as a student or plan on being a student at CSUN
Past experience working with juveniles preferred
Bi-lingual a plus
Criminology students are encouraged to apply
Need to be commited to the program for a minimum of 6 months
Must be able to work a minimum of 3-4 days a week
Be able to work either 8am-12pm or 12pm-4pm

Job Description

Interface and develop a rapport with Probation program students at school.
Explain Y.S.S. role in Probation program to school staff and how they will assist them with students (i.e. monitor attendance, homework, study groups,etc.).
Reveal to school staff CBO services available to serve these students.
Maintain daily contact with after school programs and community based organizations regarding student attendance and participation.
Monitor homework assignments of identified students.
Work with students to develop a weekly schedule that includes all of his/her academic, enrichment and after school activities.
Meet with students individually or in small groups weekly to discuss their issues and concern, with the DPO's permission.
Meet and confer with DPO regarding students' academic and attendance progress or other information pertinent to minors' supervision.
Arrange appointments for various services and activities with DPO approval.
At the request of and under the supervision of the DPO, review PDJ files to assist in appropriate assignment of services. (CORI form)
Inform the DPO of any information requested by community based organization.
Attend school or neighborhood meetings, with the DPOs permission.
Assist with casework duties and arrange for case conferences, as defined by the DPO.
Accompany the DPO on home visits when requested.
Coordinate and assist the DPO with monthly school statistics and home evaluation.
