Exam #1 – Test Version A

September 24, 2002

K. Addison

Please be sure that you are working in a “test-friendly” environment by turning off all phones and pagers (even Thomas Jefferson would agree), clearing all materials off your desks, closing all bags and backpacks, and freeing your mind of tension.  You are at one with the test.  You will do well.  You have studied.  You are psyched.  Breathe.  Begin.

Section I:  Please write five identifications, approximately one paragraph each, that includes a definition, the significance, and the historical context of each term.  Only the first five will be graded, so if you decide to substitute another term, please cross out completely what you do not want graded.

Martin Luther’s 95 Theses                                St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre

Treaty of Cateau-Chambrésis                           Defenestration of Prague

Spanish Armada                                               cuius regio, eius religio

Short Parliament                                               humanism

War of Three Henries                                       30 years war

Section II:  Please write on ONE of the following essay questions.  You will perhaps find it useful to take a few minutes and construct an outline or basic diagram of how you wish to construct your essay.  Remember: think like lawyers and prove your case!

1.                  Discuss in specific detail the distinctly different forms that the Reformation took and the ways it manifested itself in society and in politics.  What resulted from the Reformation? Was it inevitable in the time(s) and place(s) that it appeared, or could it have been delayed?  Was it received equally in all places?
