Hellenistic – Greece is no longer the center of everything; it’s a more holistic “world view” of intermixing in societies, cultures, trade, intellectual sharing.
· After the death of Alexander.
· The Hellenistic age (323-33 B.C.E.) was a different period because it was a time when the Greek culture spread across western Asia and northeastern Africa.
· It was a period of large kingdoms with heterogeneous populations, great cities, powerful rulers and vast disparities in wealth.
· A Macedonian dynasty was established into 3 kingdoms (Seleucid, the Ptolemaic, and Antiganid kingdom)
· The Ptolemies ruled Alexandria, which was the first city founded by Alexander.
· The Ptolemies actively encouraged the immigration of Greeks from the homeland and in return for their skills and collaboration in the military or civil administration, the Ptolemies would give them land and a privileged position in the new society.
· During this age, ambitious members of the indigenous population leaned the Greek language and adopted elements of the Greek way of like.
· By doing so put them in a position to become part of the privileged and wealthy ruling class.
· Greeks residents of Alexandria enjoyed citizenship in a Greek-style polis with an Assembly, a Council, and Official who dealt with local affairs and they took advantage of public works and institutions that signified the Greeks way of life.
· Invented many mechanical devices, such as the screw pump for extracting underground water.
· They had well fined institutions such as the library and the Museum (the house if the Muses).
