Outline Study Questions:  Write an outline that answers these comparatively, using the civilizations you have learned about so far. 

 

1.                  Discuss the effects of geographic conditioning on the development of a civilization.

2.                  Which element of those we listed on the board on the first day do you think is the most important in constructing the infrastructure of civilization; why? Support your answer with examples from different regions

3.                  Discuss the differences between absolute and conditional law, and how the type of government in a given area correlates to each.

4.                  Why do you think that the earliest texts are in the types of genres (i.e., wills, religious documents, law codes, inventories) in the areas?  What do these texts tell us about each society’s values?  Compare the cuneiform tablets that recorded Gilgamesh with the hymns of Egypt and the law codes of Hammurabi as examples.

5.                  In the era of Empire building, take the examples of Assyria, Egypt (particularly under Thutmose III) and China and describe the methods and successes of each.
