2006 The Dr. Walter W. Ristow Prize
in the History of Cartography
Call for Papers
DESCRIPTION: Each year the Washington
Map Society offers the Ristow Prize in honor of Dr. Walter W. Ristow, one
of the nation's premier map librarians and cartographic authors and now Chief
Emeritus of the Geography and Map Division, Library of Congress, Washington,
DC. The prize, awarded continuously since 1994, recognizes academic achievement
in the History of Cartography or Map Librarianship.
ELIGIBILITY: Full- or part-time
upper level undergraduate, graduate, and first year post-doctoral students
attending accredited U. S. or foreign colleges and universities.
AWARD: $1,000 cash award, a one year
membership in the Washington Map Society, publication of the paper in 'The
Portolan' - the internationally acclaimed journal of the Washington Map Society.
A paper may be awarded an 'Honorable Mention' at the judge's discretion.
ENTRY CRITERIA: Research papers or bibliographic
studies related to cartographic history or map librarianship and completed
in fulfillment of requirements for course work. The text, in English, may
not exceed 7,500 words.
FORMAT: Entries must be submitted in
three unbound copies with a title page and cover sheet including the entrant's
name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address.
JUDGING CRITERIA: Three broad criteria:
(1) importance of research (originality, sources, etc.), (2) quality of research
(accuracy, source reliability, etc.), writing quality (clarity, command of
cartographic terms, etc.).
DEADLINE: Not later than 1 June 2006
