Frequently Asked Questions about CCRI

Do I need therapy?
If you are here, chances are you are seeking professional assistance in coping with some difficulty in your life, whether it is personal, family, school, or work related. Our intake staff will gladly assist you in deciding if therapy is in your best interest.
Persons who benefit from therapy often include, but are certainly not limited to individuals who may have behaviors, thoughts, or feelings that often get it the way of their normal daily functioning. They may feel excessively anxious, lack-motivation, have difficulty concentrating, feel out of control, feel depressed, feel helpless or hopeless, have suicidal feelings, feel like they can't cope, or simply feel at a loss of what to do to help themselves.

How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions will vary greatly based primarily on the nature of the issues that the client brings to the therapy session, and how effectively the client and the therapist can work together to resolve those issues. One of the main goals of the therapy process is to assist the client in becoming self-reliant in handling his or her own life's challenges. This process may take several sessions, or continue for quite some time until the therapy process reaches a natural conclusion.

How much does it cost?
Fees range from $15 to $80 per fifty-minute session. Fees are calculated on a sliding scale based on the client’s annual/monthly income and ability to pay. Special conditions will be taken into consideration. We accept cash or personal checks only. We do not accept insurance.

How often will I need to see my therapist?
Generally, you will meet with your therapist once a week. There may be periods in the course of your therapy when you and your therapist decide that meeting more or less frequently is appropriate.

How qualified are CCRI therapists?
All counseling services at CCRI are provided by Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) Trainees and Registered Interns under the direct supervision of qualified, state-licensed therapists in compliance with the State of California Board of Behavioral Science standards. MFT Trainees are advanced graduate students who are currently enrolled in a Marriage and Family Therapy master’s degree program. MFT Registered Interns have completed the Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and are registered with the State of California Board of Behavioral Sciences. All MFT Trainees and Interns are required to meet with their supervisors for two hours of group supervision and one hour of individual supervision every week.

What can I expect to happen in a session?
You and your therapist will meet in one of the CCRI private therapy rooms for approximately fifty minutes. Every effort is made to ensure your safety and comfort during your visits. The role of the therapist is to help clients to achieve greater clarity and awareness, process current challenges, and identify and attain personal goals. The CCRI therapists are skilled in using a variety of therapeutic modalities that may include, talk therapy, sandplay therapy, art therapy, and dramatic play therapy. From time to time, your therapist may ask your permission to audio- or videotape a session. You have the right to refuse such requests if you do not wish to be taped. All CCRI therapists and supervisors adhere to the confidentiality standards of ethical counseling practice.

What is the process for getting an appointment with a counselor/therapist at CCRI?
The first step in requesting counseling services is to call the CCRI office between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. You will be asked a few simple questions including your name, contact information, your reasons for requesting services, your availability for appointments, and your approximate monthly or annual gross income. Your fee will be determined at this time.

Your initial appointment at CCRI will be an “intake” session to gather more detailed information about you, the issues you want to address, and your personal goals. The intake counselor will explain CCRI clinic procedures and confidentiality standards. The intake session is also an opportunity for you to raise any questions or concerns that you may have about receiving therapy at CCRI.

Based on the information you provide in the intake session, your case will be assigned to an appropriate therapist. Your assigned therapist will contact you in about one week to schedule your first counseling session. There is no charge for the intake session.

Where are you located? Where do I park? Will I have to pay for on-campus parking?
Free parking is provided for CCRI clients for scheduled counseling appointments. Your therapist will notify the CSUN parking office each time you will be arriving on campus. You must stop at the Information Booth on Prairie and Darby Streets each time you visit the campus to obtain a parking permit. The CSUN parking staff will direct you to the appropriate parking lot.
