The Minor in Chicano/a Studies
Graduates from CSUN will enter professional careers. They will inevitably work closely with Chicanos and Latinos in various capacities. It is important that they have an appreciation and understanding of the Chicano/a-Latina/o Community. The minor will provide an in-depth study of the Chicana/o/Latina/o which will enrich the education of our students and prepare them to enter a work force that is diverse.
The minor in Chicano/a Studies is relevant to the education of Liberal Studies Majors. Teachers in our schools, especially in the Southern California area, will be teaching Chicanos/as and Latinas/os. It is important that these teachers have a good understanding and an appreciation of the students that they will be teaching and of their communities.

Advisement
The advisement of students is one of the most important responsibilities of the Chicana/o Studies Department. We believe that every faculty member is an advisor. However, the primary responsibility for advisement rests with the Chair of the Department and one designated Faculty advisor. Other faculty will do advisement on a limited basis. Students are encouraged to go to a faculty member with whom they feel comfortable for advisement.
The department requires advisement of majors before they are
allowed to register each semester. A hold will be placed on their
registration until they have received advisement.
