Rinaldi (followed by Calò) is certainly wrong in his identification
of the central landmark on the reverse as a gate of Jerusalem.

In the now obsolete coronation ritual, a monk would appear before the Pope during the entry procession carrying a tuft of flax on the top of a candlestick, which he would light, producing a brief flash of flame; he would say to the Pope, "Holy Father, thus passes the glory of the world."]

The Papal Tiara, on a cushion, above a representation of the Globe.


[This particular papal tiara, presented as a coronation gift to Paul VI by the Diocese of Milan, was sold by order of Paul VI to benefit the poor of the world. Its acquisition was arranged by Francis Card. Spellman of New York, who exhibited it in St. Patrick's Cathedral, NYC, for a time. The tiara is now on permanent display in the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington DC.]
