The U.S. Department of Education has just funded California State
University Northridge to partner with Olive Vista Middle School and
Sylmar High School for a comprehensive school reform project. The
project is called Gaining Early Awarness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Programs. (Gear-Up) with the goal of increasing the
number of students going to college. All 7th grade students will be
served in the first year, followed by a new 7th grade cohort every year,
until they graduate from high school.
Other project partners are the Northeast Valley Urban Village Initiative
(NEVUVI) and New United Motor Manufacturing Incorporated
(NUMMI), who will help us acheive our goal of a school, student, and
family community culture with high expectations and effective support
for students. Our project emphasizes community building and school
reconstructing in a brand new way that is exciting and purposeful.
