Subject: Faculty Roles During Time of Conflict
It appears likely that within the next several days, the United States will
go to war with Iraq, creating the
potential for heightened tensions and public discourse on campus. Particularly
during such a time, we will
remain committed to preserving a compassionate and respectful community of scholars
at the university.
Within our community, some will be supportive of U.S. actions and some will
be opposed. Such diversity of
expression is an inherent and valued part of university life, but also needs
to occur within the traditions of our
profession. These include civility, collegiality, a respect for diverse opinions
and protection of free speech
for all.
In recent days, there have been a number of inquiries about the appropriate
role for our faculty during these
difficult times. It may help to remind ourselves of the following statement
of professional responsibility, as
expressed by the university's faculty:
"As a teacher, the professor refrains from forcing students by the authority
inherent in the instructional role
to make particular personal choices as to political action or their own part
in society." (Administrative
Manual, Section 600, Article 604.2.12)
As always, we need to remain focused on the educational needs of our students
and our obligations to them.
These include conducting all classes as scheduled and assuring that our grading
and evaluations of students
remain independent of personal political views or activities.
I want to thank the many faculty on campus who have helped our students assimilate
these difficult world
events by providing opportunities for open and balanced discussions. A university-wide
committee is
developing programs and forums that will provide additional opportunities for
discussion of diverse points of
view.
