Meeting the Requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act: A
Guide for University Faculty and Staff
On September 30, 2002, Governor Gray Davis signed California Senate Bill
105 into law. This bill amends Section 11135 of the Government Code, requiring
state governmental entities to comply with the accessibility requirements
of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act as amended. Whether in developing,
purchasing, maintaining or using electronic or information technology ,state
universities must ensure that the technology is accessible for blind and
visually impaired persons as well as deaf and hard of hearing persons.
In order to meet the requirements of Senate Bill 105 and Section 508
of the Rehabilitation Act, campus web pages, on-line teaching applications,
software, telecommunications, audio and video media, kiosks and information
transaction machines, and office equipment must be accessible. The recommendations
below are intended to assist campus faculty and staff in meeting these legal
obligations.
