Dear MARC Program Director,

I am writing to see if you have any MARC Trainees who are still
looking for summer 2005 research experiences who are interested in
applied mathematical sciences. I have been asked to help Dr. Jon
Bell, the chair of the UMBC - University of Maryland, Baltimore County
Mathematics Department, promote his very new Research for
Undergraduates (REU) Site Program that was recently funded by the
National Science Foundation - The Summer Program in Computational
Biology.

I've attached an information sheet in two formats (MS Word and PDF)
about the program for you to use to share with the students in your
program and your department colleagues, especially in the mathematics
department.

Basically, the SPCB Program will support eight students and provide a
structured research experience from June 20 to August 12, 2005.
Benefits include paid campus housing (move-in June 19) and a $3,500
stipend plus a variety of program activities designed to encourage
students toward academic research careers. They will participate in
summer seminars, GRE Prep classes, and social activities with other
summer undergraduate research students at UMBC. There is no formal
application to complete - just have any interested students send in
the required items to Jon either by electronic or regular mail by the
April 30th deadline. It is a great opportunity for students who meet
the following eligibility requirements:

• Earned a minimum of 30 college credits with at least a B average
overall and coursework including two semesters calculus, one semester
linear algebra, one semester statistics, one semester in biology,
chemistry or physics, and some exposure to programming

• Demonstrate an interest in applied mathematical sciences

• Have U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency Status that can be
documented

Please contact Jon Bell (jbell@math.umbc.edu or 410-455-2405)
with any questions.

Dr. Bell and I sincerely appreciate any help you can provide to spread
the news about this new summer research opportunity! Thank you.
